Oxford is a small village located in Chenango County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 1,450 people lived there. The village got its name from Oxford, Massachusetts, which was the hometown of the person who owned the land where Oxford, New York, was built.

Oxford is in the southern part of Chenango County. It's about 8 miles southwest of Norwich, which is the main town of the county. The village is also located between bigger cities like Binghamton to the south and Syracuse to the north.

History of Oxford Village

Early Settlers and Development

The village of Oxford was first settled in 1791. One of the first settlers was Benjamin Hovey. He was a landowner who later worked with Aaron Burr, a famous American politician. Benjamin Hovey also worked with Aaron Burr's cousin, Theodore Burr.

Transportation and Historic Buildings

A long time ago, the Chenango Canal used to pass through Oxford. This canal was like a water highway that connected the village to other towns like Utica and Binghamton. It helped people and goods travel easily.

Many of Oxford's old and important buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This means they are protected because they are special and have a lot of history.

Important roads meet in Oxford. New York State Route 12 (also called Canal Street) crosses New York State Route 220 (which is State Street to the west and Main Street to the east). Route 12 goes northeast for about 8 miles to Norwich. It also goes southwest for about 13 miles to Greene.
