History of Greene
Early Settlers and Name Change
A part of what is now Greene was bought in 1785 from the Oneida and Tuscarora people. Many Oneida people stayed in the area until around 1812. The first non-Native American settler arrived in 1792 and made his home in what is now Greene village.
The town was first called "Hornby." Later, its name was changed to Greene to honor General Nathanael Greene, who was a very important leader during the American Revolution.
How the Town Grew
The town of Greene was officially formed in 1798. It was created from parts of two other towns: Bainbridge and Union (which is in Broome County). More land was added from Bainbridge in 1799.
Over the years, Greene's size changed as new towns were created. Parts of Greene were used to form Coventry in 1806 and Smithville in 1808. Later, more land from Greene helped form part of the town of Barker in 1840. In 1843, another piece of Greene was added to Coventry.
In 1842, the small village of Greene was officially made a part of the larger town.
Transportation and Development
The old Chenango Canal was built in 1837 and helped Greene's businesses grow. It allowed goods to be moved easily by water. Later, railroads became more important for transportation. Today, major roads like New York State Route 12 and New York State Route 206 serve the town.
Greene Airport
In 1945, Robert Barrows bought the Gross Flat flying field and started the Greene Airport. This airport is still open today and is located on Airport Road. It has one of the longest and widest grass runways in the area. Many pilots use it for training. The airport also has a weather station that sends information to the National Weather Service.
Chenango River Theatre
The Chenango River Theatre was started in Greene in 2006 by Jeffrey S. Brooks. This theater has 99 seats and is the only professional theater in Broome and Chenango counties. It offers a place for people to enjoy live performances.
Geography of Greene
The town of Greene covers about 195.9 square kilometers (about 75.6 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. The Chenango River flows south through the town. This river is a branch of the Susquehanna River.
The western and southern edges of Greene form the border with Broome County.
Two important roads, New York State Route 206 and New York State Route 12, meet in the village of Greene.
