Smithville is a small town located in Chenango County, New York. In 2010, about 1,330 people lived here. The town is on the western edge of Chenango County, west of the city of Norwich.

History of Smithville
People first started settling in this area around 1797. The town of Smithville was officially created in 1808. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Greene.
In 1865, the population of Smithville was 1,634 people.
The Smithville Valley Grange No. 1397, an important local building, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. This means it's a special place recognized for its history.
Geography and Nature
Smithville covers a total area of about 131.9 square kilometers (50.93 square miles). Most of this area, about 130.7 square kilometers (50.45 square miles), is land. The rest, about 1.2 square kilometers (0.48 square miles), is water.
The western border of the town is also the border for Broome County and Cortland County.
New York State Route 41 crosses New York State Route 220 just north of Smithville Flats.
A major stream in the town is the Genegantslet Creek. This creek flows into the Chenango River, which is part of the larger Susquehanna River system.

- Lakeville – Another hamlet near the western town line and Cortland County, also on NY-41.
- Long Pond – A lake found east of Lakeville.
- Seebers Tavern – A local bar in Smithville.
- Smithville General Store – A small store on the main street, right across from Seebers Tavern.
- Smithville Center – A hamlet located in the eastern part of the town.
- Smithville Flats – A larger hamlet and a designated place for census purposes. It's in the southwestern part of the town, on NY-41 and by Genegantslet Creek.
- Tyner – A hamlet near the eastern town line, on County Road 3, east of Smithville Center.
- Wilcox Corner – A location found between Smithville Flats and Smithville Center.
