Oxhill is a small village in County Durham, England. It is part of the civil parish of Stanley. A civil parish is a local area that has its own council and manages some local services.

Oxhill is located west of Stanley. It sits at the bottom of a hill that goes up to New Kyo and Annfield Plain. To the north, you can find the C2C cycle path, East Kyo, and Harperley.

What's in Oxhill?

Oxhill is a quiet place with a few homes. It has a popular pub called The Ox, where locals and cyclists often stop for a meal. The village is also home to the main nursery school for the Stanley area, which helps young children learn and grow.

A Look Back in Time

Long ago, Oxhill was an important spot for trains. It had a major level crossing. This crossing allowed trains from the old Stanhope and Tyne Railway line to reach a shunting yard near South Moor. Here, coal was loaded onto trains to be taken to the River Tyne and then shipped out. Today, part of that old railway line is the C2C cycle path.

A small pond called Kyo Ox Pond or Kyo Tarn is about 400 meters north of The Ox pub. It was created in the late 1980s. This happened when the old Stanhope and Tyne Railway line was turned into the C2C cycle path. The pond sits between the railway's raised bank and a nearby hillside.

Famous Connections

A very famous person has family roots in Oxhill! Hillary Clinton's grandfather, Hugh Rodham, was born here in 1879. His father, Jonathan Rodham, was a coal miner living in the village. The Rodham family moved from Oxhill to the United States in the 1880s.

How Oxhill is Governed

Oxhill became its own civil parish on September 30, 1894. It was created from a part of Kyo that was in the Stanley urban district. However, on October 1, 1916, the parish of Oxhill was ended. It was then joined with the larger area of Stanley. In 1911, the Oxhill parish had about 4,436 people living in it.
