The Anthony Wayne was an early steamship that used large side wheels to move through the water. It was also known as Anthony B. Wayne or General Wayne. This wooden ship sank on April 28, 1850, in Lake Erie. It went down off the coast of Vermilion, Ohio, after two of its boilers exploded.

Around 100 people were likely on board when the accident happened. This number included both passengers and crew members. About 30 people survived the sinking.

The wreck of the Wayne was found in September 2006. It rests about 50 feet (15 meters) underwater. The location is about 8 miles north of Vermilion, Ohio. Even though it was found in 2006, the discovery was not announced until June 21, 2007. On January 2, 2018, the Wayne shipwreck was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.

Ship's History

The Anthony Wayne was built in 1837 in Perrysburg, Ohio. Samuel L. Hubbell was the builder. The ship was about 156.5 feet (47.7 meters) long. It was 25.75 feet (7.8 meters) wide and 10.25 feet (3.1 meters) deep. The ship weighed 390.50 gross tons.

It was powered by a 120-horsepower steam engine. This engine got its power from four boilers. Two large 25-inch paddle wheels pushed the ship forward. The engine was made by Hathaway & Company in 1936. The ship was named after Anthony Wayne, a famous officer in the United States Army.

The Anthony Wayne had a few accidents during its service. On May 24, 1843, the ship caught fire while at a dock in Sandusky, Ohio. On May 23, 1848, strong winds, like a hurricane, damaged the ship. It lost its upper deck while in Detroit, Michigan.

In 1849, the Wayne was greatly rebuilt in Trenton, Michigan. D.W. Donahue oversaw this work. It received a new engine from another steamer called the Columbus. The Columbus had wrecked on a sandbar in Dunkirk, New York. The Wayne's old engine was then put into another ship, the Baltimore. The new engine was more powerful, at 150 horsepower. It was built by Olds & Company and rebuilt by James Menzes. The ship also got new boilers during this time. On January 12, 1850, the Wayne was crushed by ice. It sank at a dock in the Detroit River.

Final Journey

On April 27, 1850, the Anthony Wayne began its last trip. It left Toledo, Ohio, with about 25 passengers. The ship then traveled to Sandusky, Ohio. From Sandusky, it set off for Buffalo, New York, at midnight.

The ship carried about 300 barrels of wine and whiskey. It also had some cattle and horses on board. About 40 more passengers joined the ship in Sandusky. During the disaster, Captain E. C. Gore was thrown from his bed but was not hurt. He survived in a lifeboat with the ship's clerk, a fireman, and two passengers. The lifeboat eventually floated to shore near Vermilion, Ohio.
