Patrick George Considine (born 5 September 1973) is an English actor, director, screenwriter, and musician. He is well-known for playing interesting characters, often not typical heroes, in independent films. He has won many awards, including two British Academy Film Awards and a Silver Lion for a short film.
His first big role was in A Room for Romeo Brass (1999). He also played Alfie in Last Resort (2000). Other films include In America (2003) and Dead Man's Shoes (2004). For Dead Man's Shoes, he won the 2005 Empire Award for Best British Actor.
Paddy Considine also writes and directs films. He directed Dog Altogether (2007), which won a BAFTA Award for Best Short Film. He then made it into a full movie called Tyrannosaur (2011). This film also won a BAFTA award. He later directed and starred in Journeyman.
On stage, Considine was nominated for Olivier Awards and Tony Awards for his role in the play The Ferryman. On television, he has starred in shows like Red Riding (2009) and The Suspicions of Mr Whicher (2013-2014). He also appeared in Peaky Blinders (2016) and The Outsider (2020). Most recently, he played King Viserys I Targaryen in House of the Dragon (2022-2024).

Early life and education
Paddy Considine was born in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England. He still lives there today. He grew up with his brother and four sisters in a town called Winshill. His father, Martin Joseph Considine, was Irish.
Paddy went to Abbot Beyne Senior School and Burton & South Derbyshire College. In 1990, he studied Performing Arts at Burton College. There, he met filmmaker Shane Meadows for the first time. In 1994, Considine moved to study photography at the University of Brighton. He graduated with a first-class degree.
Acting career highlights
After university, Shane Meadows cast Paddy Considine in several short films. He also appeared in Meadows' second film, A Room for Romeo Brass (1999). This was Considine's first movie role, where he played a character named Morell.
His performance led to Paweł Pawlikowski casting him in his first main role in Last Resort (2000). Considine played Alfie, a character looking for love. He won the Best Actor award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival for this role.
In the early 2000s, Considine became more well-known. He had roles in popular films like 24 Hour Party People and In America.
In 2004, Considine starred as Richard in Meadows' film Dead Man's Shoes. He also helped write this movie. He won the Best British Actor Award at the 2005 Empire Awards for his role. That same year, he was in My Summer of Love, working again with director Pawel Pawlikowski. These films helped him gain a reputation for playing strong and complex characters. In 2005, he also appeared in the Hollywood film Cinderella Man.
Considine was in the Spanish thriller Bosque de Sombras (2006). While filming, he started writing his first short film, Dog Altogether. Actor Gary Oldman encouraged him to make the film. In 2006, he starred in Pu-239 as Timofey Berezin, a worker who faces danger at a Russian nuclear facility.
In 2007, Considine had roles in two big films. He played newspaper reporter Simon Ross in The Bourne Ultimatum. He also had a funny role as DS Andy Wainwright in Hot Fuzz. In 2008, Considine starred in My Zinc Bed, a TV film. In 2009, he was Peter Hunter in the TV series Red Riding: 1980. He also worked with Shane Meadows again on Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee, a film made quickly without a script.
In 2011, Considine starred in Submarine, a film based on a book. He also appeared as Porter Nash in Blitz. That same year, he played Jack Whicher in The Suspicions of Mr Whicher TV films.
Paddy Considine has also appeared in several music videos. These include "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" (2002) by Coldplay and "Familiar Feeling" (2003) by Moloko. He also wrote the video for the Arctic Monkeys song "Leave Before the Lights Come On" (2006).
In 2013, Considine starred in The World's End. He had previously worked with the cast and crew on Hot Fuzz. In 2015, Considine was cast in the zombie film The Girl with All the Gifts.
In April 2017, Considine made his first professional stage appearance in The Ferryman. The play later moved to Broadway in New York. For his role as Quinn Carney, Considine was nominated for top acting awards. In 2020, he played Mr Martin in the HBO series The Third Day.
In August 2022, Considine began playing King Viserys Targaryen in House of the Dragon. This show is a prequel to the Game of Thrones series.
Filmmaking career
Dog Altogether and Tyrannosaur
In 2007, Paddy Considine wrote and directed his first short film, Dog Altogether. It starred Peter Mullan and was partly based on Considine's father. Dog Altogether won the BAFTA Award for Best Short Film in 2007. It also won a Silver Lion for Best Short Film at the 2007 Venice Film Festival.
He later turned the short film into his first full-length movie as a director, Tyrannosaur. Olivia Colman and Peter Mullan continued their roles from Dog Altogether. Film critic Mark Kermode called Tyrannosaur one of the best films of 2011. Olivia Colman also won Best Actress for her role in the film. By the end of 2011, the film had won 21 awards worldwide.
Journeyman
Paddy's next film was Journeyman (film) in 2017. He wrote, directed, and starred in it alongside Jodie Whittaker. The film was about a boxer and his promoter. It had an impact within the boxing community. Former UFC champion Michael Bisping said Journeyman helped him decide to retire from the sport.
Musical career
Paddy Considine has also had a musical career. He formed a band called She Talks To Angels with Shane Meadows and other friends. Considine was the drummer. After he left, the band reformed as Oslo.
Later, while studying photography, he formed a new band called Pedestrians. He is currently in a rock band called Riding the Low. They released an EP called They Will Rob You of Your Gifts (2009). Their first album, What Happened to the Get To Know Ya?, came out in 2013.
In 2014, Riding the Low got a big break when Tim Burgess from the Charlatans invited them to play at a festival. This led to the band supporting The Charlatans at a concert. In 2016, the band released their second album, Are Here to Help the Neighbourhood. Considine wrote the lyrics for the songs.
Personal life
Paddy Considine likes to keep his personal life private. In 2002, he married Shelley Insley. They have been together since he was 18 years old. They have three children. Considine still lives in his hometown of Burton upon Trent with his family.
Health
In April 2011, when he was in his 30s, Considine shared that he had been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome.
