Padmini Kolhapure was born on November 1, 1965. She is a famous Indian actress and singer. She has mostly worked in Hindi and Marathi movies. Padmini Kolhapure was one of the top actresses in the 1980s.
She has been acting for over 40 years and has appeared in more than 75 films. She has also won many awards, including three Filmfare Awards.
Padmini started acting when she was just seven years old in 1972. Some of her early movies include Zindagi (1976) and Dream Girl (1977). She became very well known after her role as young Roopa in the film Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978).
When she was 15, Padmini won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. This was for her role in the movie Insaf Ka Tarazu (1980). At 17, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the musical film Prem Rog (1982). This made her one of the youngest actresses to win these awards.
She was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Souten (1983). Later, she received a Best Actress nomination for Pyar Jhukta Nahin (1985). Padmini Kolhapure was born on November 1, 1965. She comes from a Marathi family. She is the second of three daughters. Her father, Pandharinath Kolhapure, was a professional musician. Her mother is Nirupama Kolhapure.
Her older sister, Shivangi Kolhapure, was also an actress. Shivangi is married to actor Shakti Kapoor. Their children are actress Shraddha Kapoor and actor Siddhanth Kapoor. Padmini's younger sister, Tejaswini Kolhapure, is also an actress.
The family's last name, "Kolhapure," comes from their hometown of Kolhapur in Maharashtra. Padmini's mother was from a Konkani-speaking family. Her father was a talented singer and played the Veena.
Padmini is also related to very famous singers. Her father's mother was the half-sister of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. This means Padmini is the niece of legendary singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle. Her mother used to work for Air India.
Padmini Kolhapure's Career
As a child, Padmini sang in the background for movie songs. She sang in films like Yaadon Ki Baaraat and Kitaab. Later, she also sang songs for her own movies. These include Vidhaata and Daana Pani. She even released a music album called Music Lovers with Bappi Lahiri.
A famous singer, Asha Bhosle, suggested Padmini's name to director Dev Anand. He then cast her in the film Ishk Ishk Ishk (1975). This led to more acting roles for Padmini. She appeared in Dreamgirl (1977) and Zindagi (1976). She also gave a strong performance in Gehrayee (1980).
Padmini's mother left her job to support Padmini's acting career. One of Padmini's most famous child roles was in Raj Kapoor's 1977 film Satyam Shivam Sundaram. Personal Life
Padmini Kolhapure met Pradeep Sharma, also known as Tutu Sharma, while working on the film Aisa Pyaar Kahan (1986). He was the producer of the film. They got married in 1986. They have a son named Priyaank Sharma, who was born in February 1990.
Priyaank has worked as an assistant director and an actor. He married Shaza Morani in February 2021.
Legacy and Impact
Padmini Kolhapure is seen as one of the most popular actresses of the 1980s. In 2022, Outlook India magazine included her in their list of "75 Best Bollywood Actresses." Her co-star Anil Kapoor has said that his career success is thanks to her. He mentioned that because she agreed to do Woh 7 Din, he is where he is today.
The Tribune newspaper described her as "charming, beautiful and graceful." They also noted that her innocent look reminds people of the 80s, when she was very popular.
In 1981, Padmini Kolhapure famously gave King Charles III a quick kiss on the cheek. This caused a lot of excitement in the British news. In 2016, Padmini also became a designer. She started her own fashion brand with her friend Sita Talwalkar. Her niece, Shraddha Kapoor, helped launch the brand.
