Padmini Kolhapure was born on November 1, 1965. She is a famous Indian actress and singer. She mostly works in Hindi and Marathi movies. Padmini Kolhapure was one of the top actresses in the 1980s.

She has been acting for over forty years. She has been in more than 75 movies. She has also won many awards, including three Filmfare Awards.

Padmini started acting when she was just seven years old in 1972. Some of her early movies include Zindagi (1976) and Dream Girl (1977). She became very well known after her role as young Roopa in the film Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978).

When she was 15, Padmini won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. This was for her role in the movie Insaf Ka Tarazu (1980). At 17, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the musical movie Prem Rog (1982). This made her one of the youngest actresses to win these awards. She was also nominated for other awards for her roles in Souten (1983) and Pyar Jhukta Nahin (1985).

Her Early Life and Family

Padmini Kolhapure was born on November 1, 1965. She comes from a Marathi and Konkani family. Her father, Pandharinath Kolhapure, was a musician. Her mother was Nirupama Kolhapure. Padmini is the second of three daughters.

Her older sister, Shivangi Kolhapure, was also an actress. Shivangi is married to actor Shakti Kapoor. Their children, Shraddha Kapoor and Siddhanth Kapoor, are also actors. Padmini's younger sister, Tejaswini Kolhapure, is an actress too.

The family name "Kolhapure" comes from Kolhapur in Maharashtra. Padmini's father was a talented singer and played the Veena. He was the son of Pandit Krishnarao Kolhapure. Padmini's father's mother was the half-sister of the famous singer Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. This means Padmini is the niece of legendary singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle.

As a child, Padmini sang in the background for movie songs. She sang with her sister Shivangi in films like Yaadon Ki Baaraat. Later, she sang for her own movies, including Vidhaata. She also released a music album called Music Lovers with Bappi Lahiri.

A famous singer, Asha Bhosle, suggested Padmini's name to director Dev Anand. He then cast her in the movie Ishk Ishk Ishk (1975). This led to more roles in films like Dreamgirl (1977) and Zindagi (1976). She also gave a strong performance as a school girl in Gehrayee (1980).

Padmini's mother left her job to support Padmini's acting career. One of Padmini's most famous child roles was in Raj Kapoor's 1977 film Satyam Shivam Sundaram. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for this role.

She started playing lead roles at age 15. Her first lead role was in Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai with Rishi Kapoor. Padmini also acted on television. She made her TV debut in Ekk Nayi Pehchaan. In 2021, she appeared in the web series Dil Bekaraar. She has also been a guest on many reality shows.

Life Outside Films

While working on the film Aisa Pyaar Kahan (1986), Padmini met Pradeep Sharma. He was the producer of the film. They got married in 1986. They have a son named Priyaank Sharma, who was born in 1990. Priyaank has worked as an actor and also helped director Rajkumar Santoshi with the film Phata Poster Nikla Hero. He got married in 2021.

Padmini Kolhapure is seen as one of the most popular actresses of the 1980s. In 2022, Outlook India magazine included her in their list of "75 Best Bollywood Actresses." Her co-star Anil Kapoor has said that Padmini helped his career a lot. He said, "It’s because she agreed to do Woh 7 Din that, I am where I am today." The Tribune newspaper described her as "charming, beautiful and graceful."

In 1981, Padmini Kolhapure gave King Charles III (who was then Prince Charles) a quick kiss on the cheek. This caused a lot of talk in the British news at the time. In 2016, Padmini started her own fashion brand with her friend Sita Talwalkar. Her niece, Shraddha Kapoor, helped launch the brand.
