History of Paicines

Paicines started as a community on a large piece of land called Rancho Ciénega de los Paicines. This land was granted by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1842.

The settlement was first called Tres Pinos, which means "Three Pines" in Spanish. This name came from three tall pine trees on a nearby hill. But in 1873, a train station was built about five miles north. This station was also called Tres Pinos, which caused a lot of confusion! So, in 1874, the town's name was changed to Grogan for a few months. Finally, it was officially named Paicines.

Exploring Paicines' Geography

Paicines is surrounded by interesting natural features. You'll find Tres Pinos Creek, the San Benito River, and the Paicines Reservoir nearby. The area is also close to the San Andreas Fault, a famous crack in the Earth's crust. This means the region is part of the San Andreas Rift Zone.

South and east of Paicines, the land becomes mountainous. The county line for San Benito County runs along the Gabilan Range. Paicines is also a great starting point if you want to visit Pinnacles National Park. This amazing park stretches across the mountains between Monterey and San Benito counties.
