Palena is a cool place in Chile! It's a type of local government area called a commune. You can find it in the Palena Province, which is part of the Los Lagos Region. This area gets its name from the beautiful Palena Lake nearby.

People and Population in Palena
A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. According to a census from 2002, Palena covers about 2,764 square kilometers. That's a pretty big area!
In 2002, there were 1,690 people living here. Most of them (904) were men, and 786 were women. Palena is considered a completely rural area, which means most people live in the countryside, not in big cities. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Palena grew a little bit, by 37 people.
How Palena is Governed
Palena is a commune, which is a local government area in Chile. It's managed by a group called the municipal council. The person in charge of this council is called an alcalde, which is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by people voting every four years.
From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde of Palena was Aladin Delgado Casanova. He was part of a political group called RN.

Palena is part of a larger area for voting. This means that people from Palena, along with people from other towns like Castro, Ancud, and Futaleúfu, vote for people to represent them in the national government.
- In the Chamber of Deputies (which is like one part of the country's parliament), Palena is represented by Gabriel Ascencio and Alejandro Santana.
