History of Parnell
Parnell was officially started on July 5, 1887. It began as a stop for trains on the Chicago Great Western Railway. The city was formally made a town in 1888. This railway route was known as the "Diagonal Route." It went from Kansas City to Waterloo, Iowa. One of the first businesses in Parnell was the Diagonal Hotel.
Ben Jones's father, Horace Jones, helped create the community. They first thought about naming it Jonesville. But they found out there was already another Jonesville in Missouri. So, they chose the name Parnell. This name honored Charles Stewart Parnell, an important Irish politician. He was working to give Ireland more self-rule at that time.
Horace Jones started a ranch on the northeast side of Parnell. He raised Angus cattle and saddle horses there. At this ranch, Ben and his son Jimmy trained a horse named Seth. Seth became one of the top 20 thoroughbred sires (father horses) from 1925 to 1928. This caught the attention of Herbert M. Woolf, who owned Woolford Farm. Ben trained Woolf's horse, Lawrin, which won the Kentucky Derby in 1938.
Later, Ben and Jimmy were asked to train horses at Calumet Farm in 1939. There, they achieved amazing success. They trained seven Kentucky Derby winners between 1941 and 1958. They also trained two Triple Crown winners: Whirlaway and Citation. Ben's record of six Derby wins is still a record today. Jimmy took over as trainer for the 1957 and 1958 wins. Ben stayed as Calumet's manager until 1961. Jimmy left Calumet in 1964 to manage racing at Monmouth Park.
After retiring in 1976, Jimmy returned to his large 1,750-acre ranch in Parnell. He sold the ranch in 1986. Jimmy had no children and passed away in Maryville, Missouri in 2001. He left a large donation of $7.2 million to St. Francis Hospital there.
