Pascal Chimbonda (born 21 February 1979) is a French football coach and player. He recently worked as a player-manager for the English club Skelmersdale United.

Chimbonda plays as a right-back. He started his professional career in 1998 with Le Havre in France. He played over 100 games for the club's main team and its B team. In 2003, he moved to Bastia.

In 2005, Pascal joined Premier League club Wigan Athletic. This was their first season in the top league. He played so well that he was chosen for the Premier League Team of the Year. After a great season, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2006.

He played for Spurs for two seasons. Later, he joined Sunderland before coming back to Tottenham briefly in 2009. In the summer of 2009, he signed with Blackburn Rovers. He stayed there until 2011. Then, he moved to Football Championship club Queens Park Rangers.

During the 2011–12 season, he played for Doncaster Rovers. After that, he was without a club for a year. Chimbonda then played for smaller non-league teams like Market Drayton Town and Carlisle United. He retired after a short time with AC Arles-Avignon. However, in 2017, he returned to play for English non-league teams Washington and Ashton Town.

Pascal Chimbonda first played international football for Guadeloupe. Later, he was picked for the France squad for the 2006 World Cup. He was a substitute in all of France's matches, including the final. France lost the final to Italy in a penalty shoot-out. His only game for France was a warm-up match against Denmark.

In October 2023, Chimbonda became the manager of Skelmersdale United. In January 2024, he also registered to play for the team. He left his role on 4 May 2024, after the team was moved down a league.

Club Journey

Starting Out

Chimbonda was born in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe. He began his football journey in France with Le Havre in 1999. His first game was on 29 April 2000 against Strasbourg. He played for Le Havre for four years. When Le Havre moved down to Ligue 2, he joined Bastia.

After Bastia also moved down a league in July 2005, he left the club. He chose to join Wigan Athletic instead of Marseille. He said he was ready for a new challenge. He felt that joining Wigan was a great chance to play against the best players in the world.

Time at Wigan Athletic

When Chimbonda joined Wigan Athletic, he became one of their best players. This was Wigan's first season in the Premier League. He played 44 games for the club in all competitions. He played in almost every game of the 2005–06 Premier League season.

He scored two goals for Wigan in that season. These goals came in back-to-back league games against Fulham and Portsmouth. Because of his amazing first season in English football, Chimbonda was named in the PFA Team of the Year. He was voted the best right-back in the Premier League for the 2005–06 season. While at Wigan, he also played in the 2006 Football League Cup Final.

Many clubs were interested in signing him. On the last day of the 2005–06 season, he asked to leave Wigan. This made the Wigan management unhappy. They set a high price for him. They told Chimbonda he could "play in the reserves until his contract is over" if no club bought him.

Tottenham Hotspur made offers to buy him, but Wigan turned them down. Chimbonda really wanted to move to Tottenham. He said that "moving to Tottenham will help me take the next step forward." He called Wigan a "stepping stone" in his career.

He played his last game for Wigan on 26 August 2006. He came on as a substitute in a win against Reading. He finally joined Tottenham on the last day of the transfer window, 31 August 2006.

Playing for Tottenham Hotspur

On 31 August 2006, Wigan Athletic agreed to let Pascal Chimbonda join Tottenham Hotspur. The transfer was completed just before midnight. He played his first game for Tottenham on 9 September 2006 against Manchester United.

Chimbonda played in a 2–1 win against Chelsea. He continued playing even after getting a knee injury early in the game. Tottenham's manager praised Chimbonda for his great spirit. On 14 January 2007, Chimbonda was involved in an incident during a match against Newcastle United.

He scored his first goal for Tottenham on 20 January 2007. It was the equalizing goal in a 1–1 draw with Fulham. He also started for Spurs in the 2008 Football League Cup Final, which they won against Chelsea. On 12 March 2008, he missed an important penalty kick in a penalty shoot-out against PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Cup. Tottenham was knocked out of the competition.

Time at Sunderland

On 26 July 2008, Chimbonda signed with Sunderland. He joined his former teammates Teemu Tainio and Steed Malbranque there.

Back to Tottenham Hotspur

On 26 January 2009, Chimbonda had a medical check-up to return to Tottenham Hotspur. The deal was completed the next day. His second first game for Tottenham was on 31 January. It was a 3–2 loss against Bolton Wanderers. He came on as a substitute and helped set up a goal. He could not play in the 2009 Football League Cup Final because he had already played in the cup for Sunderland that season. During this second time at Tottenham, he played in 5 games. This included three league matches and two UEFA Cup games.

Blackburn Rovers

On 27 August 2009, Chimbonda joined Blackburn Rovers. He signed a two-year contract. He played his first game for them on 29 August in a 0–0 draw against West Ham United. On 18 October 2009, Chimbonda scored his first goal for Blackburn. It was in the East Lancashire derby against Burnley, which Blackburn won 3–2. By the end of that season, Chimbonda had played 29 games and scored one goal. In January 2011, Blackburn Rovers ended Chimbonda's contract.

Queens Park Rangers

On 21 January 2011, Chimbonda signed a six-month contract with Queens Park Rangers. He made his first appearance against Nottingham Forest. He came on as a substitute in the 73rd minute. On 21 April 2011, it was announced that Queens Park Rangers would release Chimbonda. The manager said the club would not offer him a longer contract.

Doncaster Rovers

On 28 September 2011, Chimbonda signed a short-term deal with Championship club Doncaster Rovers. This was his sixth English club. He played his first game on 18 October against Blackpool. Five games later, he got an injury that kept him out for the rest of 2011. On 29 December, Chimbonda signed a new six-month contract to stay until the end of the season.

Later Career Teams

After leaving Doncaster Rovers in 2012, Chimbonda did not play for a season. A move to Chicago Fire did not happen. In July 2013, Chimbonda started training with Northern Premier League Division One South team Market Drayton Town. He also tried out for League One team Tranmere Rovers. When he didn't get a deal with Tranmere, Chimbonda went back to Market Drayton. He said he would play for free.

On 18 October 2013, Chimbonda signed a three-month contract with League One team Carlisle United.

On 1 October 2014, Chimbonda signed with French Ligue 2 team AC Arles-Avignon. He was released in February 2015 after playing four games. Chimbonda first retired from playing after leaving Arles-Avignon.

On 5 October 2017, Chimbonda came out of retirement. He signed with non-league team Washington.

In January 2019, Chimbonda signed a one-month contract with Ashton Town. He played his first game for Ashton Town in a 6–2 win. He left the club in March after playing four games.

International Career

Playing for Guadeloupe

In 2012, he played for Guadeloupe again. This was during the qualifiers for the 2012 Caribbean Cup. He played in games against Martinique, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

Playing for France

Even though some people thought he might not make the team, Chimbonda was chosen for France's 2006 World Cup squad. This was because of how well he played for Wigan in the Premier League.

He played his first and only game for France on 31 May 2006. It was a World Cup warm-up friendly match against Denmark. France won 2–0. Chimbonda came on as a substitute in the final minutes of the game. He did not play in any of the actual 2006 World Cup matches.

Managerial Career

In October 2023, Pascal Chimbonda became the manager of the non-league team Skelmersdale United. He said he wanted to be an inspiration for black managers.

On 30 January 2024, Chimbonda played his first game for Skelmersdale United. He had registered himself as a player earlier that month. The game was a 2-2 home draw against Charnock Richard FC.
