Early Life and Training
Paterson Joseph was born in Willesden Green, Middlesex, England. His parents came from Saint Lucia. He went to Cardinal Hinsley R.C. High School in London.
He once described himself as a "terrible bunker" at school. This meant he often skipped classes to spend time reading at the local library. After school, he worked briefly in a hospital kitchen. He then decided to become an actor.
Joseph trained at the Studio '68 of Theatre Arts in London. He later attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). After his training, he performed with famous groups like the Royal Shakespeare Company and The Royal National Theatre.

Paterson Joseph has had a long and varied career in theatre, television, and film.
Theatre Performances
In 1991, Joseph won an award for his performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He played Oswald in King Lear and Dumaine in Love's Labour's Lost.
He has played many important roles on stage. These include the main character in Othello and parts in Henry IV and Hamlet. In 2012, he played Brutus in a RSC production of Julius Caesar. This play was set in Africa.
In 2004, Joseph directed a version of Romeo & Juliet. He worked with 20 young people from London who were not professional actors. In 2015, he wrote and performed a one-man play called Sancho: An Act of Remembrance. This play was about the life of Ignatius Sancho.
From late 2019 to early 2020, Joseph starred as Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic Theatre in London.

Joseph has appeared in many British TV shows. He played Mark Grace in Casualty from 1997 to 1998. .....
Other notable TV roles include Lyndon Jones in Green Wing and the Marquis de Carabas in Neverwhere. He also appeared in Doctor Who episodes "Bad Wolf" and "The Parting of the Ways" as Rodrick.
From 2008 to 2010, Joseph played Greg Preston in Survivors. He was DI Wes Layton in Law & Order: UK from 2013 to 2014. He also played "Holy Wayne" Gilchrest in the HBO series The Leftovers. From 2016 to 2018, he starred as Connor Mason in the series Timeless.
In 2020, Joseph played Kamal Hadley in the series Noughts + Crosses. He also narrated the National Geographic series Mega Cities. In 2021, he played Commander Neil Newsome in the thriller series Vigil.
Film Appearances
Paterson Joseph's first major film role was as Benbay in In the Name of the Father in 1993.
In 2000, he appeared as Keaty in Danny Boyle's adventure film The Beach, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. He also appeared in Greenfingers that same year.

In October 2022, Paterson Joseph released his first novel. It was called The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho. The book tells the story of Charles Ignatius Sancho through fictional diary entries and letters.
The novel was praised by critics. It was shortlisted for the 2023 Jhalak Prize. It also won the 2023 RSL Christopher Bland Prize, which is a major literary award. Joseph also contributed to a book called Encounters with James Baldwin: Celebrating 100 Years in 2024.
Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University
In October 2022, Paterson Joseph was announced as the new Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University. This is an important leadership role at the university. He officially started in May 2023. Other famous people who have held this role include Helena Kennedy and Jon Snow.
Personal Life
Paterson Joseph used to live in the Loire Valley, France, with his former wife Emmanuelle and their son. He later moved back to London. He is a fan of the Brazil national football team.
