Paterson Davis Joseph (born 22 June 1964) is a talented British actor and author. You might know him from his many roles in popular TV shows like Casualty, Green Wing, and Timeless. He has also appeared in movies such as The Beach and the recent film Wonka.
Beyond acting, Joseph is a successful writer. His first novel, The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho, won a special award called the Christopher Bland Prize in 2023. He also holds an important position as the Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University.

Early Life and Education
Paterson Joseph was born on June 22, 1964, in Willesden Green, London. His parents came from Saint Lucia. He went to Cardinal Hinsley R.C. High School in north-west London. Joseph once joked that he was "terrible" at school. He preferred to spend his time reading at the local public library.
Before becoming an actor, he worked briefly helping out in a hospital kitchen. He then decided to follow his dream of acting. Joseph trained at Studio '68 of Theatre Arts in London from 1983 to 1985. Later, he studied at the LAMDA. After his training, he performed with famous theatre groups like the Royal Shakespeare Company and The Royal National Theatre.
Acting Career
Paterson Joseph has had a long and varied career in acting. He has performed in many plays, TV shows, and movies.
On Stage: Theatre Roles
In 1991, Joseph won an award for his early theatre work. He played Oswald in King Lear and Dumaine in Love's Labour's Lost for the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1992, he starred as Richard Henry in Blues for Mister Charlie.
Joseph has played many important characters in theatre. These include the main role in Othello and parts in Henry IV and Hamlet. In 2012, he played Brutus in a RSC production of Julius Caesar that was set in Africa. In 2004, he directed a version of Romeo & Juliet for a TV documentary. He worked with 20 young people from London who were not professional actors.
In 2015, Joseph wrote and performed a one-man play called Sancho: An Act of Remembrance. This play was about the life of Ignatius Sancho. It was shown in Oxford, Birmingham, and toured the United States. More recently, in 2019 and 2020, he played Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic Theatre in London.
On Screen: Television Roles
Joseph is well-known for his many roles on British television. He has acted in both dramas and comedies. He played Mark Grace in Casualty and Lyndon Jones in Green Wing. He was also the Marquis de Carabas in Neverwhere.
You might have seen him as Rodrick in the Doctor Who episodes "Bad Wolf" and "The Parting of the Ways". He played Space Marshall Clarke in the sci-fi comedy Hyperdrive. From 2008 to 2010, he starred as Greg Preston in Survivors. He also played DI Wes Layton in Law & Order: UK from 2013 to 2014.
In American TV, he was "Holy Wayne" Gilchrest in the HBO series The Leftovers. He also played Connor Mason in the science fiction series Timeless. In 2020, he played Kamal Hadley in Noughts + Crosses. Joseph has also lent his voice to narrate documentaries like Mega Cities and Inside Obama's White House.
On Screen: Film Roles
Paterson Joseph has appeared in several feature films. His first movie role was as Benbay in In the Name of the Father (1993).
In 2000, he was in Danny Boyle's adventure film The Beach, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. He also appeared in Greenfingers that same year. In 2005, he played Giroux in the action film Æon Flux with Charlize Theron.
More recently, Joseph played the villain Arthur Slugworth in the 2023 musical fantasy film Wonka. He has also voiced characters in short films, like Victor in Bet Your Bottom Dollar.
Voice Acting and Radio Work
Joseph has done a lot of voice work. In 2011, he returned to the Doctor Who universe for an audio drama called Earth Aid. In 2016, he played the Marquis de Carabas again in a BBC radio show, a role he first played in the 1996 TV series Neverwhere. He also voiced Colonel Arbuthnott in an audio production of Murder on the Orient Express.
Writing Career
In October 2022, Paterson Joseph released his first novel, The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho. The book tells the story of Charles Ignatius Sancho through made-up diary entries and letters. Critics praised the book for bringing Sancho to life. The novel was shortlisted for the 2023 Jhalak Prize and won the 2023 RSL Christopher Bland Prize.
Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University
In October 2022, Paterson Joseph was announced as the new Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University. This is an important leadership role at the university. He officially started in May 2023.
Personal Life
Paterson Joseph used to live in the Loire Valley in France with his French ex-wife, Emmanuelle, and their son. He has since moved back to London. He is a fan of the Brazil national football team.
