Music Career

Early Bands and Remixes

From 2002 to 2004, Paul Epworth was the lead singer and guitarist for a band called Lomax. He later remixed some of their songs.

Epworth became well-known for his remix work under the name "Phones." A remix is when a producer takes an existing song and changes it to create a new version. He gained attention for his remix of Bloc Party's song "Banquet." He also remixed songs for big artists like New Order, U2, and Coldplay. In 2006, he released his own original music as "Phones."

For a short time, he also made music under another name, 'Epic Man'. His song "More Is Enough" was even featured in the video game Need For Speed: Pro Street.

Producing and Songwriting Success

Paul Epworth started producing and writing songs for other artists in 2004. He produced albums for bands like Bloc Party and Maxïmo Park, which were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. He also worked with British rappers like Kano and Plan B.

In 2007, he started co-writing songs more often. He helped write "Foundations" for Kate Nash, which was a big hit. He also worked on albums for Sam Sparro and Primal Scream.

The year 2009 was very busy for Epworth. He co-wrote and produced songs for Jack Peñate's album Everything Is New. He also worked on Florence and the Machine's first album, Lungs, including popular songs like "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" and "Cosmic Love". He continued to work with Friendly Fires and The Big Pink. In February 2009, he won an award for best newcomer at the Music Producers' Guild Awards.

Later in 2009, he received two more Mercury Music Prize nominations for his work on Lungs and Friendly Fires' album. He also worked on music for Plan B's number one album The Defamation Of Strickland Banks and wrote with the famous singer Adele.

In 2010, Paul Epworth won Producer of the Year at both the Brit Awards and the Music Producers' Guild Awards. He also signed a solo record deal with Columbia Records. He produced songs for Cee Lo Green, including "It's OK".

A major highlight came in late 2010 and early 2011 with the release of Adele's worldwide hit song "Rolling in the Deep" from her album 21. Epworth co-wrote and produced this song, along with "I'll Be Waiting" and "He Won't Go" on the same album. He also produced Florence and the Machine's album Ceremonials.

On February 12, 2012, at the 54th Grammy Awards, Paul Epworth won four Grammy Awards! These included Producer of the Year, Album of the Year (for Adele's 21), Song of the Year, and Record of the Year (both for "Rolling in the Deep"). Later that year, he started his own record label, Wolf Tone, which signed artists like Glass Animals and The Horrors.

In 2013, Epworth and Adele won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song "Skyfall", which was the theme song for the James Bond movie.

In 2015, Adele released her album 25, which featured two songs co-written and produced by Epworth: "I Miss You" and "Sweetest Devotion." This album also won Album of the Year at the 59th Grammy Awards.

In 2016, he produced songs for The Stone Roses and was an executive producer for the Glass Animals album How to Be a Human Being. He also co-wrote and produced the song "Chains" for Usher.

In September 2020, Paul Epworth released his first solo album, Voyager. This album showed his love for house music and sci-fi sounds. In the same month, he talked about his long working relationship with Adele in an interview.

In March 2025, Paul Epworth was honored with the MPG Icon Award by the Music Producers Guild, recognizing his amazing contributions to music.

The Church Studios

In October 2013, Paul Epworth bought The Church Studios, a famous recording studio in London. This studio has a rich history, having been used by artists like Eurythmics, Bob Dylan, and Radiohead.
