Paul Galdone (born June 2, 1907 – died November 7, 1986) was a talented artist and author. He is famous for illustrating and writing many popular children's picture books. His work brought classic stories to life for young readers.
Early Life and Art Studies
Paul Galdone was born in Budapest, Hungary. In 1921, he moved to the United States. He loved art and studied it at the Art Student's League. He also attended the New York School for Industrial Design. During World War II, he served in the US Army.
Career and Special Awards
Paul Galdone illustrated almost all of Eve Titus' books. This includes the Basil of Baker Street series. These books were so popular they became a Disney animated movie. The film was called The Great Mouse Detective.
Galdone and Titus were nominated for the Caldecott Medal. This award is for the best American picture book for children. They were nominated for their books Anatole (1957) and Anatole and the Cat (1958). These books later received the Caldecott Honor in 1971.
After he passed away, Galdone received another honor. In 1996, he was given the Kerlan Award. This award recognized his big contribution to children's literature. Many of his retellings of classic tales are still loved today. These include The Little Red Hen and Three Billy Goats Gruff.
Later Life and Passing
Paul Galdone died on November 7, 1986. He was 79 years old. He passed away from a heart attack in Nyack, New York.
