Paul Emerson Carlyle Ince (born 21 October 1967) is a famous English football manager and former player. He was most recently the manager of Reading. Paul Ince was a strong midfielder during his playing career, which lasted from 1986 to 2007.
He started his career at West Ham United and later played for big clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Inter Milan in Italy. He is one of the few players to have played for both rival clubs Liverpool and Manchester United.
Paul Ince played most of his career at the top level of football. After starting with his childhood club West Ham United, he joined Manchester United in 1989. There, he won the Premier League twice and the FA Cup twice. He also won the Football League Cup once during his six years at Old Trafford.
After his time at Manchester United, Ince moved to Serie A club Inter Milan in 1995. He played there for two years and was a runner-up in the 1997 UEFA Cup. He then returned to England to play for Liverpool, and later for Middlesbrough and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Paul Ince also played for the England national team 53 times, scoring two goals. He played in major tournaments like UEFA Euro 1996, the 1998 FIFA World Cup, and Euro 2000. He made history by becoming the first black player to captain England.
After retiring as a player, Ince became a football manager. He managed several clubs, including Milton Keynes Dons (twice), Blackburn Rovers, Notts County, Blackpool, and Reading. His son, Tom, is also a professional footballer.

Paul Ince's Playing Career
Paul Ince was born in Ilford, London. He grew up supporting West Ham United. The club's manager, John Lyall, noticed him playing when he was just 12 years old.
Starting at West Ham United
Ince joined West Ham as a trainee when he was 14. He made his first team debut on 30 November 1986 against Newcastle United. He quickly became a regular player in the 1987–88 season. People noticed his speed, stamina, strong tackling, and good passing skills. He also had a powerful shot.
Ince became a key player in West Ham's midfield. However, the club was not doing well at the time. In August 1988, Ince became well-known across the country. He scored two amazing goals in a surprising 4–1 win against Liverpool in the League Cup. West Ham reached the semi-finals of the League Cup that season. Despite Ince's great performances, West Ham was relegated at the end of the season.
Moving to Manchester United
After playing just one game in the Second Division for West Ham, Paul Ince made a big move to Manchester United. This transfer was quite controversial because a photo of Ince in a Manchester United kit appeared in a newspaper before the deal was even finished. This made many West Ham fans upset for a long time.
Ince joined Manchester United on 14 September 1989. He quickly became a strong presence in the team's midfield. In his first season, Manchester United won the FA Cup. Ince played at right-back in the final and was named man of the match in the replay.
Over the next few years, Ince became a central figure for Manchester United. He helped the team win the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1991. A year later, they won the League Cup in 1992.
Manchester United continued to be very successful in the 1993–94 season. Ince was a key player in the midfield as the team won both the Premier League and the FA Cup. This was known as winning "the double."
In June 1995, Manchester United sold Ince to Inter Milan for £7.5 million. This was a very large fee for an English player at the time. While at United, Ince won two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup Winners' Cup, and one League Cup.
Playing in Italy with Inter Milan
In the 1995–96 season, Inter Milan did not win the league, finishing seventh in Serie A. However, Ince had a good first season, playing in most of Inter's league matches. He performed well after a slow start.
The next year, Ince had another successful season with Inter. He scored 6 goals in 24 league matches, and Inter finished third. He also helped Inter reach the UEFA Cup Final in 1997. Inter lost the final to Schalke 04 after a penalty shoot-out.
Ince was offered a new contract by Inter Milan's president. However, he decided to return to England for family reasons and joined Liverpool.
Returning to England with Liverpool
In July 1997, Ince came back to England and joined Liverpool, who were rivals of his former club Manchester United. Some Liverpool fans were unsure about him because of his past with United.
In his first season at Anfield, he scored an important goal in a 1–1 draw against Everton. He also scored twice in a 4–0 win against Arsenal, helping Liverpool finish third in the league. Ince did not win any major trophies during his two seasons with Liverpool. He felt that some of his teammates were more interested in going out than being professional on the pitch.
Time at Middlesbrough
In July 1999, Ince moved to Middlesbrough for £1 million. He was signed by his former Manchester United teammate, Bryan Robson, who was then the manager.
Ince played 106 games for Middlesbrough, scoring nine goals. In July 2002, he left the club after turning down a new contract. He said the long journey from his home was a problem.
Joining Wolverhampton Wanderers
In August 2002, Ince signed a one-year contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers, a team in the Football League First Division. In his first season outside the top league, he helped the team get promoted to the Premier League. They won the play-off final 3–0 against Sheffield United.
Ince continued to play for Wolves in the Premier League for the 2003–04 season. The team finished last that year. He stayed with Wolves for several more seasons, making over 100 appearances. In April 2006, Ince said he wanted to keep playing for Wolves. However, when the manager resigned, the new manager decided not to offer Ince a new contract.
Playing for England
Paul Ince made his first appearance for the full England team on 9 September 1992 in a friendly match against Spain. On 6 June 1993, he made history by becoming England's first black captain during a match against the USA.
Ince scored his only two international goals on his 12th appearance. This was in a 7–1 win against San Marino on 17 November 1993.
Euro 1996 and World Cup 1998
During UEFA Euro 1996, Ince was a key midfielder for England. He helped the team reach the semi-finals. England played very well in the tournament, especially in a 4–1 win against the Netherlands. Ince was fouled for a penalty that helped England take the lead in that game. England lost in the semi-finals to Germany after a penalty shoot-out.
In a crucial 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Italy on 11 October 1997, Ince played so hard that his white England shirt turned red from a cut on his head. The game ended in a draw, and England qualified for the World Cup. Ince was part of the England squad for the finals in France. England reached the second round but lost to Argentina in another penalty shoot-out.
Ince played in all three of England's group games at Euro 2000. England was eliminated from the tournament after losing two of their three matches.
Paul Ince's Managerial Career
After his playing career, Paul Ince moved into football management.
Starting at Macclesfield Town
On 31 August 2006, Ince signed with Swindon Town as a player-coach. However, he left the club by mutual agreement on 6 October due to the long travel times from his home.
On 23 October 2006, Ince became the new player-manager of Macclesfield Town. The club was at the bottom of League Two when he joined. He helped to improve the team's confidence, and they managed to avoid being relegated on the very last day of the season. Ince retired as a player while at Macclesfield, making only one appearance.
Success with Milton Keynes Dons
Ince was announced as the new manager of Milton Keynes Dons on 25 June 2007. The Dons quickly rose to the top of their division. Ince was named League Two Manager of the Month several times.
Ince won his first trophy as a manager in the Football League Trophy final on 30 March 2008, where MK Dons beat Grimsby Town 2–0 at Wembley. A week later, the Dons secured promotion to League One. They then became League Two champions after beating Bradford City 2–1.
Managing Blackburn Rovers
On 22 June 2008, Ince was appointed manager of Blackburn Rovers. He became the first black British manager in England's top football division. Blackburn won their first game of the 2008–09 Premier League season, beating Everton 3–2.
However, after winning only three games out of 17, Ince was sacked on 16 December 2008. He had been in charge for just six months, one of the shortest reigns for a Premier League manager.
Return to Milton Keynes Dons and Notts County
On 3 July 2009, Ince returned to manage Milton Keynes Dons for a second time. This spell was less successful, with the Dons finishing 13th in League One. He announced he would leave the club at the end of the 2009–10 season.
Ince returned to management on 28 October 2010, signing a three-year deal with Notts County. He left the club on 3 April 2011 after a series of defeats.
Time at Blackpool
On 18 February 2013, Blackpool appointed Ince as their manager. His son, Tom, was playing for the team at the time. Ince's first match as Blackpool manager was a 2–0 defeat against Leeds United. He got his first win on 9 March 2013, a 2–1 victory against Watford.
Under Ince, Blackpool had their best-ever start to a league season. However, Ince left Blackpool on 21 January 2014, after less than a year in charge.
Managing Reading
On 19 February 2022, Paul Ince and Michael Gilkes were announced as interim managers of Championship side Reading. Ince's first game saw the team win 2–1 at home. He successfully guided Reading to safety, ensuring they would stay in the Championship for the 2022–23 season. In May 2022, Ince was given the manager's job permanently.
On 11 April 2023, Ince was sacked by Reading. At that time, Reading was in 22nd place in the Championship and had not won in their previous eight games.
Personal Life
Paul Ince married Claire in 1990. They have two sons and a daughter. His oldest son, Tom, is also a footballer. Tom has played for the England national under-17 team and for Paul's former club, Liverpool. Paul and Tom were reunited when Paul became interim manager of Reading in February 2022.
Paul Ince is also the uncle of singer Rochelle Humes.
