Club History and Founding
Paysandu Sport Club was founded on February 2, 1914. Before this, some members of another club, Norte Club, were unhappy. They disagreed with a decision made by the football league of Pará that seemed to favor a rival team, Remo.
Because of this, they decided to start a new club. Hugo Leão led this group. They chose the name Paysandu Football Club. This name was a way to remember a sad event in Paysandú, a city in Uruguay. This event was linked to the start of a war against Paraguay.
The newspaper O Estado do Pará announced a meeting for the new club in February 1914. Many athletes, including some from Norte Club, came to the meeting. Deodoro de Mendonça was chosen as the first president.
A second meeting happened on February 10, 1914. More than 15 new people joined, bringing the total to 100 founding members. At a third meeting on February 19, 1914, the club's name changed from "Foot-Ball" to "Sport Club." This change was made so Paysandu could join the Pará State League. So, Paysandu Sport Club officially began on February 2, 1914.
Major Achievements and Trophies
Paysandu has won several important football titles. They won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B (Brazil's second division) twice, in 1991 and 2001.
In 2002, Paysandu had a fantastic year. They won the Copa Norte and then the Copa dos Campeões. To win the Copa dos Campeões, they beat strong teams like Palmeiras and Cruzeiro. Winning this cup meant they qualified for the 2003 Copa Libertadores, a huge international tournament. That same year, they also won the Campeonato Paranaense (their state league) for the third time in a row!
Even with these big wins, Paysandu had a tough time in the top Brazilian league (Série A) in 2002 and 2003. They barely avoided being sent down to a lower division.
International Football: Copa Libertadores
The 2003 Copa Libertadores was Paysandu's first time playing in this major South American competition. They did very well in the group stage, not losing any games. They won four matches and drew two. A memorable game was their 6-2 victory against Cerro Porteño in Paraguay.
In the next round, the "Round of 16," Paysandu faced Boca Juniors, a very famous team from Argentina. Paysandu won the first game 1-0 in Argentina, which was a huge surprise! However, Boca Juniors won the second game 4-2 in Belém, which meant Paysandu was out of the tournament. Boca Juniors went on to win the whole competition that year.
After this, Paysandu continued to play in different leagues, sometimes moving between Série B and Série C. The club has also won the Copa Verde four times and holds a record 50 titles in their state league, the Campeonato Paraense.
Club Symbols and Identity
Team Crest and Meaning
The Paysandu club crest is blue and white. It has the letters "PSC" which stand for Paysandu Sport Club. At the bottom of the crest, there is a winged foot. The person who designed it, Mário Bayma, said it means the team's speed would be unmatched.
Above the main shield, there are three stars. The two silver stars represent their two wins in the Série B championship (1991 and 2001). The gold star in the middle celebrates their big win in the Copa dos Campeões in 2002.
Club Anthems
Paysandu has an official anthem that was created in 1916. The words were written by José Simões, and the music by Professor Manuel Luís de Paiva.
There is also a "popular" hymn. This one was written by Francisco Pires Cavalcanti after Paysandu beat the famous Uruguayan team Peñarol in 1965. This popular hymn is actually more well-known than the official one!
Traditional Home Kit
The team's uniform was suggested by Hugo Leão, Paysandu's first president, in February 1914. The club members voted and approved it. The uniform has stayed mostly the same since then.
Club Rivalries
Paysandu has a very strong rivalry with Remo. Their matches are known as the Clássico Rei da Amazônia (Amazon King derby) or Re-Pa.
The first game between them was on June 14, 1914, and Remo won 2-1. The biggest win in this derby happened on July 26, 1945, when Paysandu won 7-0! In 2016, this derby was even declared a special cultural heritage of the Pará state.
Paysandu also has a smaller rivalry with Tuna Luso. Their first game was a friendly match on December 11, 1932, which ended in a 3-3 tie.
Home Stadiums
Paysandu's main stadium is called Curuzu. It can hold up to 16,200 people.
They also play some of their bigger matches, like those in the Copa Libertadores or against very famous clubs in the Campeonato Brasileiro, at the Mangueirão stadium. This stadium is much larger.
