Paysandu Sport Club, often called Paysandu, is a professional football club from Belém, Pará, Brazil. It was started on February 2, 1914. The team plays in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, which is the second-highest football league in Brazil. They also compete in the Campeonato Paraense, the top league in their home state of Pará.

Club History: From Norte Club to Paysandu

On February 2, 1914, a group of people from Norte Club decided to start a new team. They were unhappy with a decision by the football federation that favored another club, Remo. Hugo Leão led this meeting and suggested the name Paysandu Football Club. This name was chosen to remember a sad event in Paysandú, a city in Uruguay. This event led to a war against Paraguay.

The Norte Club had played well that year. They needed to beat Guarany to get an extra match against Grupo do Remo. But the game ended in a draw. The Norte Club members asked the league to cancel the match because of problems. However, the league said no. This made the Norte Club members even more determined to create a new, stronger club.

In February 1914, a local newspaper, O Estado do Pará, announced the meeting for the new club. Many athletes, including 42 from Norte Club, came to the meeting. They chose Deodoro de Mendonça as the first president. On February 10, 1914, more people joined, bringing the total to 100 founding members. A few days later, on February 19, 1914, the club's name was changed from "Foot-Ball" to "Sport Club." This change helped Paysandu join the Pará State League. So, Paysandu Sport Club was officially founded on February 2, 1914.

Major Wins and International Play

Paysandu has won several important championships. They won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B twice, in 1991 and 2001. In 2002, they won the Copa Norte. That same year, they also won the Copa dos Campeões. This was a huge win because they beat strong teams like Palmeiras and Cruzeiro. Winning the Copa dos Campeões meant they qualified for the Copa Libertadores in 2003. They also won the Campeonato Paranaense for the third year in a row in 2002.

Even though they won three trophies in 2002, Paysandu had a tough time in the top Brazilian league, Série A. They barely avoided being sent down to a lower league. The next year, 2003, was similar in the league.

However, the 2003 Copa Libertadores was very different. This was Paysandu's first time in this big South American competition. They did great in the group stage, not losing any games. They even had a famous 6-2 win against Cerro Porteño in Paraguay. In the next round, they played against a very strong team, Boca Juniors. Paysandu won the first game 1-0 in Argentina. But Boca Juniors won the second game 4-2 in Belém, which meant Paysandu was out of the tournament. Boca Juniors went on to win the whole competition that year.

After that, Paysandu had some ups and downs in the Brazilian leagues. They were sent down from Série A in 2005. They have moved between Série B and Série C since then. The club has also won the Copa Verde five times, and they hold a record 50 state titles in the Campeonato Paraense.

Club Symbols and Identity

The Club Crest

The Paysandu club crest is blue and white. It has the letters "PSC," which stand for Paysandu Sport Club. At the bottom of the crest, there is a winged foot. The person who designed it, Mário Bayma, said it means the team's speed would be unmatched. Above the shield, there are three stars. The two silver stars represent their two Série B titles from 1991 and 2001. The gold star in the middle celebrates their Copa dos Campeões title in 2002.

Team Anthems

Paysandu has an official anthem written in 1916 by José Simões, with music by Manuel Luís de Paiva. There is also a "popular" anthem. This one was composed by Francisco Pires Cavalcanti after Paysandu beat Peñarol in 1965. This popular anthem is actually more well-known than the official one.

Traditional Home Kit

The team's uniform was suggested by Hugo Leão, Paysandu's first president, in February 1914. The team members voted and approved it a few days later. The uniform has stayed the same since then.

Club Rivalries: The Amazon King Derby

Paysandu's biggest rival is Remo. Their matches are called the Clássico Rei da Amazônia, which means "Amazon King derby," or simply Re-Pa. The first game between them was on June 14, 1914, and Remo won 2–1. The biggest win in this derby happened on July 26, 1945, when Paysandu won 7–0. In 2016, this derby was recognized as an important cultural heritage of the Pará state.

Paysandu also has a smaller rivalry with Tuna Luso. Their first game was a friendly match on December 11, 1932, which ended in a 3–3 tie.

Home Stadiums

Paysandu's main stadium is Estádio da Curuzu, also known as Curuzu. It can hold up to 16,200 fans. Another large stadium, Mangueirão, has also hosted many Paysandu matches. This includes important games like those in the Copa Libertadores and Campeonato Brasileiro matches against other big clubs. Mangueirão can hold 55,000 people.
