A Look Back: Pemberton Point's Past
Why Was It Called Windmill Point?
Old records from the 1820s show this place was first known as "Windmill Point." Two brothers used windmills here to pump ocean water. They put the water into big containers to collect salt. This salt was then used to preserve fish.
Amazing Swim Across Hull Gut

Wind Power: Turbines at Pemberton Point
Pemberton Point has been a leader in using wind power. In March 1985, an Enertech 40 kW wind turbine was set up here. It started making electricity right away. The state's energy department helped pay for this turbine. It was placed next to the high school.
Sadly, a big storm in March 1997 damaged the turbine beyond repair. It had to be taken down. But a new, more powerful wind turbine was planned to take its place.
Hull Wind 1: A New Beginning
A new Vestas V47 turbine, named "Hull Wind 1," began making power in December 2001. This turbine can produce 660 kW of electricity. It stands about 150 feet (46 meters) tall.
Hull Wind 1 was a very important project. It was the first commercial wind turbine on the entire East Coast of the United States. It was also the first in all of New England. Plus, it was the first commercial wind turbine in a city area in North America.
In its first year, Hull Wind 1 saved the town of Hull over $100,000! Because of its success, plans started in 2003 for another turbine, "Hull Wind 2." At first, they thought about putting it near Hull Wind 1. But some people living nearby were worried about having two so close. So, the new Vestas V80 1.8 MW turbine was built on a landfill to the east. This was away from Pemberton Point. It started working in May 2006.
