Pen Llithrig y Wrach from Conwy

Pen Llithrig y Wrach is a mountain peak located in Snowdonia, North Wales. It stands tall at 799 meters (about 2,621 feet) above sea level. This mountain is part of the Carneddau range, which is a group of mountains in Snowdonia. It is known for its unique name and the beautiful views it offers.

About Pen Llithrig y Wrach

Pen Llithrig y Wrach is one of four special peaks in the Carneddau range called "Marilyns." A Marilyn is a mountain or hill in the British Isles that has a drop of at least 150 meters (about 492 feet) on all sides. This means it stands out from the land around it.

Where is Pen Llithrig y Wrach?

This mountain is located in the Conwy area of North Wales. To its east, you can see Creigiau Gleision, which is another Marilyn. To the west, you'll find Pen yr Helgi Du and the much larger Carnedd Llewelyn. Looking north, you can spot Craig Eigiau and Llyn Eigiau, which is a lake. If you look south, you might see Gallt yr Ogof, Glyder Fach, and Tryfan.

What's in a Name?

The name Pen Llithrig y Wrach is from the Welsh language. It means "slippery peak of the witch." People think it got this name for a few reasons. One idea is that the ground near the top can be quite boggy and slippery, especially after rain. Another idea is that the mountain's pointed shape looks a bit like a witch's hat.

Climbing Pen Llithrig y Wrach

Pen Llithrig y Wrach is a great mountain for hiking. It's often seen as a good starting point to reach the higher peaks of the Carneddau range, like Carnedd Llewelyn, by going through Pen yr Helgi Du.

You can climb this mountain from different directions:

  • From the South: You can start your climb from Capel Curig or from the main A5 road.
  • From the North-East: Another way to climb is from the villages of Dolgarrog or Tal-y-bont. These villages are located in the Conwy valley.

When you view Pen Llithrig y Wrach from the north, especially near Llandudno, it stands out clearly against the skyline. On its eastern side, the mountain slopes down steeply towards Llyn Cowlyd, a beautiful lake.
