Peranga is a small town and area in Queensland, Australia. It is located in the Toowoomba Region. In 2021, the area of Peranga had a population of 98 people.

Where is Peranga Located?

Peranga is a small town found in an area called the Darling Downs. It is about 70 kilometers (43 miles) north-west of Toowoomba. Another town, Dalby, is about 55 kilometers (34 miles) north-east of Peranga.

A Look at Peranga's History

The name Peranga comes from an old farm outpost called Rosalie Plains. This name was chosen when the town was first mapped out in 1911.

Early Buildings and Services

The Peranga Post Office opened its doors on January 11, 1913. This was an important service for the growing community.

Peranga State School started teaching students in 1915. It served the children of the town for many years before closing on July 30, 1973.

The Peranga & District Bowls Club opened in 1955. It offered a place for people to play bowls and socialize.

Churches in Peranga

The Anglican Church of St John the Evangelist was officially opened around 1959. However, it held its last service on May 13, 1961, because fewer people were attending.

The Peranga Methodist Church opened on June 25, 1961. Later, in 1977, it became the Peranga Uniting Church when the Methodist Church joined with other churches. The last service there was on January 19, 1997. The church building was then moved to Goombungee to be used as a hall.

Changes Over Time

Peranga used to be a busy center for dairy farming. But the town started to decline after the Oakey-Cooyar railway line closed in the mid-1960s. The local hotel burned down in 1967, and the school closed a few years later in 1973.
