Petr Mrázek is a professional ice hockey goaltender from the Czech Republic. He was born on February 14, 1992. Petr plays for the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League (NHL).
He was chosen by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. This was in the fifth round, as the 141st player picked overall. Petr spent the first part of his NHL career with the Red Wings. He has also played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Chicago Blackhawks.

Petr Mrázek's Hockey Journey
Starting in Junior Hockey
Before coming to North America, Petr played in the Czech Extraliga. This is a top league in the Czech Republic. He played for HC Vítkovice Steel in the 2007–08 playoffs.
Petr then joined the Ottawa 67's in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In his first season (2009–10), he won 12 games out of 30. He had a 3.00 goals against average (GAA) and a .905 save percentage. In the playoffs, he won 4 games.
In October 2011, Petr signed a three-year contract with the Red Wings. But he stayed in the OHL for the 2011–12 season. He played 50 games for the 67's. He won 30 games and had three shutouts. His GAA was 2.84 and his save percentage was .917.
After the OHL season, Petr joined the Grand Rapids Griffins. This team is the Red Wings' minor league team in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Becoming a Professional Goalie
First Steps in Pro Hockey
Petr started the 2012–13 season with the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL. This is a lower minor league team for the Red Wings. He won his first game 4–1. He had a 2–1–0 record and a .944 save percentage in three games.
He was then called up to the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL. He played his first AHL game on November 3, 2012. He made 29 saves in a 4–1 win. Petr won 12 of his first 15 games with the Griffins. He even set a team record by winning his first six starts. He got his first professional shutout in February 2013.
Making it to the NHL
Petr made his NHL debut with the Red Wings on February 7, 2013. He played against the St. Louis Blues. Detroit won 5–1, and Petr made 26 saves. He became only the second goalie in hockey history to win his ECHL, AHL, and NHL debuts in the same season.
Petr played for the Griffins in the AHL All-Star Classic. The Griffins won the Calder Cup championship that season. Petr played all 24 playoff games. He won 15 games and had four shutouts.
In the 2013–14 season, Petr was named to the AHL Second All-Star Team. He was second in the AHL for GAA (2.10) and third in save percentage (.924). He also played nine games for Detroit in the NHL. He had two shutouts in the NHL that season.
Time with the Red Wings
On July 1, 2014, the Red Wings signed Petr to a one-year contract. In the 2014–15 season, he played 29 games for the Red Wings. He had 16 wins and three shutouts. He was named the AHL Player of the Week in March 2015. He had two shutouts in a row for the Griffins.
On April 16, 2015, Petr played his first Stanley Cup playoffs game. He made 44 saves to help the Red Wings win 3–2. He got his first playoff shutout on April 21. He had another playoff shutout on April 25. He was the 14th Red Wings goalie to have two shutouts in one playoff series. He was also only the third rookie goalie to do so.
Petr was named the NHL Second Star of the Week in January 2016. He had a 3–0–0 record that week. On July 27, 2016, the Red Wings signed Petr to a two-year contract. In the 2016–17 season, he had 18 wins. This season ended the Red Wings' 25-season playoff streak.
Moving to Philadelphia
On February 19, 2018, Petr was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. He made his debut for the Flyers on February 22. He made 19 saves in a 2–1 win.
Playing for Carolina
After the season, Petr became a free agent. On July 1, 2018, he signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Petr shared the goalie duties with Curtis McElhinney in the 2018–19 season. On April 4, 2019, Petr got his 23rd win of the season. This helped the Hurricanes make the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. He had 23 wins and a 2.39 goals against average.
Petr and the Hurricanes then beat the defending champions, the Washington Capitals, in the first round of the playoffs. They reached the Eastern Conference Finals. Petr got injured in the second round and was replaced by Curtis McElhinney.
On July 1, 2019, Petr re-signed with the Hurricanes for two years. He had 21 wins in the 2019–20 season before the season was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the 2020–21 season, Petr started with a very low 0.99 GAA. He had to leave a game early due to a thumb injury. This injury needed surgery. Petr returned from injury on April 4, 2021. He got his third shutout of the season.
Time with Toronto
On July 28, 2021, Petr signed a three-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team hoped he would work well with goalie Jack Campbell. However, Petr had a tough time with the Maple Leafs. His save percentage was never above .900.

In March 2022, Petr was placed on waivers. He played one game with the Toronto Marlies before returning to the Maple Leafs. He then got a groin injury, which ended his season. Even with a lower save percentage, he finished with 12 wins because the Maple Leafs had a strong offense.
Joining Chicago
On July 7, 2022, Petr was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. He played 33 games for the Blackhawks in the 2024–25 season. He had 10 wins.
Back to Detroit
On March 7, 2025, Petr was traded back to the Detroit Red Wings along with Craig Smith.
Playing for Anaheim
On June 28, 2025, Petr was traded by the Red Wings to the Anaheim Ducks. He was traded along with two draft picks for fellow goalie John Gibson.

Petr has played for the Czech Republic junior team. He played in the 2012 World Junior Championships. He helped his team reach the quarterfinals. He was chosen as the best goaltender of the championship. He had 3 wins and a .928 save percentage. He made 52 saves in a 5–2 win against the United States junior team.
Petr also played for the Czech Republic senior team. He won a bronze medal at the 2012 World Championship. He played for the Czech Republic at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. He also played in the 2017 World Championship.
He represented the Czech Republic team at the 2024 World Championship and won a gold medal.
