Petr Yan, born on February 11, 1993, is a professional mixed martial artist from Russia. He is famous for fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Petr was once the UFC Bantamweight Champion. Before joining the UFC, he was also a champion in another league called Absolute Championship Berkut. As of June 2025, he is ranked #3 in the UFC bantamweight division.

Early Life and Boxing Training
Petr Yan's father had mixed Chinese and Georgian-Russian heritage, and his mother was Russian. When he was in sixth grade, Petr started learning ITF taekwondo. He often got into fights, so his family moved around a lot to try and stop this.
Petr's older brother trained in boxing in their city of Dudinka. Petr really wanted to learn boxing too. His brother didn't want to take him along at first, so Petr secretly followed him to the gym. From then on, Petr trained in boxing for eight years. He became a "Master of Sport" in boxing, which is a high achievement in Russia. Petr also studied Physical Culture and Sport at Siberian Federal University.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Starting Out
Petr Yan had his first professional MMA fight in December 2014. He won by knockout in the third round. In 2015, he joined a Russian fighting league called Absolute Championship Berkut. Fans quickly liked him after his first fight there, which he won by decision. In his third fight, he won by submission in less than a minute! He then won another fight by knockout.
Fighting in Absolute Championship Berkut
In October 2015, Petr won a fight against Murad Kalamov. This win gave him a chance to fight for the bantamweight championship belt.
Petr had his first professional loss in March 2016 against Magomed Magomedov. After five rounds, Magomedov won by a split decision. Many people, including the league's president, thought Petr should have won. This fight was even named ACB's best fight of 2016.
After this loss, Petr fought Ed Arthur and won by decision. Then, in April 2017, he had a rematch with Magomed Magomedov. This time, Petr won by unanimous decision after five tough rounds. He became the ACB bantamweight champion!
In September 2017, Petr defended his title against Matheus Mattos. He won by knockout in the third round, keeping his championship belt.
Joining the Ultimate Fighting Championship
After defending his title, Petr Yan signed a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in January 2018.
He made his UFC debut in June 2018 and won by technical knockout in the first round. In September 2018, he fought Jin Soo Son and won by unanimous decision. This exciting fight earned him the "Fight of the Night" award.
In December 2018, Petr fought Douglas Silva de Andrade and won when his opponent's corner stopped the fight in the second round.
In early 2019, Petr signed a new contract with the UFC. He then faced John Dodson in February 2019 and won by unanimous decision. After this win, he signed another new contract, showing how much the UFC valued him.
Petr continued his winning streak by defeating Jimmie Rivera in June 2019. Later that year, he had surgery on his elbow.
In December 2019, Petr fought Urijah Faber and won by knockout in the third round. This impressive win earned him the "Performance of the Night" award. After this fight, Petr said he believed the champion, Henry Cejudo, was avoiding fighting him.
Becoming Bantamweight Champion
In May 2020, the UFC Bantamweight Champion, Henry Cejudo, retired and gave up his title. Petr Yan then got to fight José Aldo for the vacant championship. On July 12, 2020, Petr won the fight by technical knockout in the fifth round, becoming the new UFC Bantamweight Champion!
Petr was set to defend his title against Aljamain Sterling in December 2020, but the fight was moved to March 2021. In that fight, Petr lost his title by disqualification in the fourth round because he used an illegal knee strike.
A rematch with Sterling was planned for October 2021, but Sterling had to pull out due to neck issues. Cory Sandhagen stepped in to fight Petr for an interim (temporary) championship. Petr won this fight by unanimous decision, earning the "Fight of the Night" award.
The title unification rematch with Aljamain Sterling finally happened in April 2022. Petr lost this fight by a split decision.
Recent Fights
In October 2022, Petr Yan faced Sean O'Malley. He lost by split decision, but many fans and experts felt that Petr should have won the fight. This fight also received the "Fight of the Night" bonus.
In March 2023, Petr fought Merab Dvalishvili and lost by unanimous decision.
Petr was scheduled to fight Song Yadong in December 2023 but had to withdraw due to an injury. The fight was rebooked for March 2024. During this fight, Petr suffered a serious knee injury in the first round. Despite his injuries, he won the fight by unanimous decision.
In November 2024, Petr Yan fought former champion Deiveson Figueiredo and won by unanimous decision. Petr is scheduled to fight Marcus McGhee in July 2025.
Personal Life
Petr Yan is married and has two sons. In 2022, he shared a message of peace on social media, showing the flags of Russia and Ukraine with a dove.
