Philip Hansen Anselmo (born June 30, 1968) is an American musician. He is best known as the lead singer for the groove metal band Pantera. He also sings for the southern metal supergroup Down and the hardcore band Superjoint. Anselmo owns his own record label, Housecore Records.
Many people see Anselmo as one of the most famous singers in metal music history. He is known for his energetic stage presence. Early in his career with Pantera, he was inspired by singers like Rob Halford. Later, he developed a more powerful vocal style. He has also been part of other metal projects like Scour.
Early Life and Interests
Anselmo was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He has Italian, French, and Danish family roots. He went to several schools in Louisiana and Texas. As a teenager, he worked on a shrimp boat.
Hobbies and Fun Activities
Anselmo loves horror films and has a huge collection of them. He knows a lot about horror movies and culture. He also enjoys boxing and has written articles about the sport. Anselmo is a fan of the NFL team New Orleans Saints. He has even helped coach a youth team.
Music Career Highlights
In 1981, Anselmo started his first band, Samhain. He sang and played guitar. In 1985, he joined a band called Rapid Phaze, which later became Razor White. They mostly played cover songs. Anselmo left high school to focus on his music.
Joining Pantera
By 1986, Pantera had released three albums. They were looking for a new singer to create a heavier sound. The band's original singer, Terry Glaze, left. In 1986, 18-year-old Anselmo officially joined Pantera. He moved to Texas to record their fourth album, Power Metal, released in 1988.
After Power Metal, Pantera changed their style. In 1989, they signed with Atco Records. They released their fifth album, Cowboys from Hell, in 1990. This album helped them become famous and created a new metal style called groove metal.
In 1992, Pantera released Vulgar Display of Power, which was even heavier. In 1994, Far Beyond Driven came out and reached No. 1 in the United States.
In 1996, Pantera released The Great Southern Trendkill. Due to some disagreements, Anselmo recorded his vocals in New Orleans. The other band members recorded in Texas. In 1997, Pantera released their live album, Official Live: 101 Proof. Their ninth and final studio album, Reinventing the Steel, came out in 2000. Pantera went on a break in 2001 and officially broke up in 2003.
In July 2022, it was announced that Anselmo would join bassist Rex Brown for Pantera's first world tour in 22 years. Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante are playing in place of the late Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul.
After Pantera
After Pantera broke up, Anselmo focused on his project, Superjoint Ritual. The Abbott brothers from Pantera, guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul, formed a new band called Damageplan.
Anselmo later expressed regret about some past disagreements. He wrote music about the loss of Darrell on the Down album Over the Under. The band dedicated their song "Lifer" to Darrell. Anselmo wanted to become friends with Vinnie Paul again, but this did not happen before Paul passed away in 2018.
In 2015, Anselmo spoke about Pantera's use of the Confederate flag. He said it was a mistake to use it on their merchandise. He explained that Pantera originally used the image because they liked Lynyrd Skynyrd, not to promote hate.
Down Band Projects
Down is a heavy metal supergroup formed in 1991 in New Orleans. The band includes members from Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and Eyehategod. Down has released three studio albums: NOLA, A Bustle in a Hedgerow, and Over the Under.
Superjoint Band Projects
Superjoint Ritual is a metal band from New Orleans. Anselmo formed it with Joe Fazzio and Jimmy Bower in the early 1990s. Their music mixes sludge metal and hardcore punk. They have released three albums: Use Once and Destroy (2002), A Lethal Dose of American Hatred (2003), and Caught Up in the Gears of Application (2016).

Arson Anthem
Arson Anthem is a Southern hardcore punk band. It started when Eyehategod singer Mike Williams moved into Anselmo's apartment after a hurricane. They began playing music with Hank Williams III and Collin Yeo. The band features Mike Williams on vocals, Anselmo on guitar, Hank Williams III on drums, and Collin Yeo on bass.
Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals
From 2011 to 2012, Anselmo wrote and recorded a solo album called Walk Through Exits Only. His band, The Illegals, backed him up. This album was released on July 16, 2013. Their second album, Choosing Mental Illness as a Virtue, came out on January 26, 2018. The band includes Anselmo on vocals, Stephen Taylor on guitar, Joey Gonzalez on drums, Mike DeLeon on lead guitar, and Derek Engemann on bass.
Scour Band Projects
In May 2016, it was announced that Anselmo would be the singer for a new band called Scour. The band plays a style of black metal mixed with grindcore and thrash. Scour's first EP was released in July 2016. Their second EP, Red, came out in September 2017. The third EP, Black, was released on November 27, 2020. Scour's debut album, Gold, was released on February 21, 2025.
En Minor Band Projects
In 2017, Anselmo announced a new project called En Minor. He said the band is influenced by 1980s gothic rock music. They released a single in August 2019. Their first full-length album, When the Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out, was released in September 2020.
Other Musical Contributions
In 1993, Anselmo produced Crowbar's self-titled album. He also sang backing vocals on some songs. In 1996, he recorded backing vocals for Crowbar's Broken Glass album.
In 1998, Anselmo sang a duet called "By the River" on Vision of Disorder's Imprint album. In 2000, Anselmo worked with Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath. They wrote and recorded three songs together.
In 2014, Anselmo appeared in the YouTube comedy series Metal Grasshopper. He taught comedian Dave Hill how to "be" metal. In 2015, Anselmo sang backing vocals on a song for the band Cattle Decapitation.
In January 2016, Anselmo sang with a band that included Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl and Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo. They performed "Ace of Spades" to honor the late Lemmy Kilmister.
Housecore Records
Anselmo started his own record label, Housecore Records, around 2001. He wanted to release music from bands he was involved in and support new artists. Housecore Records actively releases music by Anselmo's bands and other groups he produces.
