In 1981, Anselmo started his first band, Samhain, with friends. He sang and played guitar. In 1985, he joined a band called Rapid Phaze. They later changed their name to Razor White. This band mostly played cover songs of popular rock and metal bands. After a year, he wanted to try new things in music.
Joining Pantera and Rise to Fame
Pantera was a band that had released four albums. But they were not very well known. Their original singer left because the band wanted a heavier sound. In 1986, when Anselmo was 18, he officially joined Pantera. He moved to Texas to record their fourth album, Power Metal, which came out in 1988.
After Power Metal, Pantera changed their look. In 1989, Pantera signed with Atco Records. They released their fifth album, Cowboys from Hell, in 1990. This album made them famous and helped create a new metal style called groove metal. They released a video about their tour in 1991.
In 1992, Pantera released their sixth album, Vulgar Display of Power. It had an even heavier sound. In 1994, Far Beyond Driven came out and became the number one album in the United States.
In 1996, Pantera released The Great Southern Trendkill. Because of some disagreements, Anselmo recorded his singing parts for this album in New Orleans. The other band members recorded in Texas. In 1997, Pantera released their only live album, Official Live: 101 Proof. Their ninth and final album, Reinventing the Steel, came out in 2000. Pantera took a break in 2001. In 2003, they released a collection of their best songs. Later that year, Pantera broke up due to communication problems.
In 2022, it was announced that Anselmo would tour with Pantera again in 2023. He will be joined by Rex Brown, Zakk Wylde, and Charlie Benante. This will be Pantera's first world tour in 22 years.
After Pantera
After Pantera broke up, Anselmo spent a lot of time on his other band, Superjoint Ritual. The other members of Pantera, Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, formed a new band called Damageplan.
