Philipsburg's History

Early Inhabitants

The first people to live in the Philipsburg area were Paleo-Indians. They arrived thousands of years ago, near the end of the last Ice Age. These early people were nomads, meaning they moved from place to place. They lived by hunting animals and gathering plants.

Later, the Seneca people settled here. They built villages, started farms, and created trails. The Moshannon Creek, which flows near Philipsburg, gets its name from a Seneca word. "Mos’hanna’unk" means "elk river place." A small group of Seneca people lived in the area until the Cornplanter Tract was created. This was the only native reservation in Pennsylvania. It was later removed when the Kinzua Dam was built.

How Philipsburg Began

Between 1795 and 1796, a man named Henry Philips bought a large piece of land. This land covered parts of Centre, Clearfield, and Cambria County. He offered land to the first twelve families who wanted to settle east of the Moshannon Creek.

In 1812, the very first screw mill in the United States was built in Philipsburg. The village officially became a borough on November 29, 1864.

Flooding Events

Philipsburg has experienced several floods. In 1936, the Cold Stream Dam broke, causing a lot of downtown Philipsburg to flood. The borough also saw floods in 2018 and 2021.

  • The Rowland Mansion on South Centre Street, which was once the home of U.S. Congressman Charles Hedding Rowland.

The main shopping area in Philipsburg has also been updated. A $1 million project helped to make the downtown area look new and inviting. The Philipsburg Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. This means it is recognized as an important historical area.
