Phillipston's Story
Phillipston was first settled way back in 1751. It officially became a town on October 20, 1786. Back then, it was called Gerry, named after a politician named Elbridge Gerry. The town used to be part of Templeton before it became its own separate town.
Later, on February 5, 1814, the town's name was changed to Phillipston. This new name honored William Phillips, Jr., who was the tenth Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. A Lieutenant Governor is like a second-in-command to the state's governor.
In 1941, a special piece of land called Elliott Laurel was given to The Trustees of Reservations. This group helps protect important natural and historical places.
Two important historical sites in Phillipston have been recognized nationally. The Phillipston Center Historic District and the Searles Hill Cemetery were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are considered very important places in American history. The Historic District was added in 1999, and the Cemetery in 2011.
