How Phipps Peak Got Its Name
Phipps Peak is named after William Phipps. He was an early pioneer in California. William Phipps came from Kentucky. He was a soldier in the American Army.
In 1854, he settled in a town called Georgetown, California. This town is about 100 miles west of Lake Tahoe. Six years later, he moved closer to Lake Tahoe. He settled near a place called McKinney Bay. He had a large piece of land there.
This land was close to a stream now known as General Creek. Phipps Pass, a mountain pass, is also named after him. Both General Creek and Phipps Pass honor William Phipps.
