The Phrynobatrachus perpalmatus is a small type of frog. It belongs to the Phrynobatrachidae family. People sometimes call it the Lake Mwero river frog or the webbed puddle frog. This frog lives in many parts of Africa. You can find it in countries like Sudan, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Burundi, Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique. It might even live in northern Zimbabwe.

What Does It Look Like?

Male Phrynobatrachus perpalmatus frogs are about 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) long. Female frogs are a bit bigger, growing to about 3 centimeters (1.2 inches). Their bodies are short but stretched out. Their noses, or snouts, are round.

Their finger tips are not wide. However, their toe tips have small, flat pads. Their toes are almost completely webbed, like a duck's foot. This helps them swim!

The back of the frog (called the dorsum) is brown. Sometimes, it has a light stripe down its spine. There are also black bands with light edges. These bands run from behind the frog's eyes all the way to its groin.

Male frogs have a special pouch under their chin. This is called a vocal sac. They use it to make sounds. This sac can be plain or have black spots.

How Do They Communicate?

Male frogs make a special sound to attract mates. This sound is like a metallic clicking noise. It can also sound like a very rough croak.

Where Do They Live?

Phrynobatrachus perpalmatus frogs live in places that are always wet. These places include humid savannas, grasslands, and rainforests. They can also be found in areas where forests used to be. They live in places that are less than 800 meters (2,600 feet) above sea level.

These frogs especially like flooded grasslands. These areas often have tall reeds. This is likely where they lay their eggs.

How Are They Doing?

These frogs can be very common in some areas. However, they are not found everywhere. Their homes are often spread out in small patches.

Scientists believe these frogs can live in wet areas on farms. This includes places like rice fields. This means they are good at adapting to different environments. They are probably not in danger, except in a few small areas. Many of these frogs live in protected areas.
