Pic Palas, also known as Pic de Palas, is a tall mountain in the Pyrenees mountain range. It sits right on the border between Spain and France. This impressive peak is the highest point in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France and also in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. It stands at an altitude of 2,974 m (9,757 ft), which is almost 3,000 meters high!

Where is Pic Palas?

Pic Palas is a very tall mountain, reaching 2,974 m (9,757 ft) into the sky. It is part of a larger group of mountains called the Massif du Balaïtous, which is a mountain range within the Pyrenees.

The very top, or summit, of Pic Palas is a special spot. It's where the borders of three different areas meet. On the Spanish side, it's the Province of Huesca. On the French side, it's where the departments of Pyrénées-Atlantiques (in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region) and Hautes-Pyrénées (in the Occitanie region) come together.

What is Pic Palas Made Of?

The rocks that make up the summit of Pic Palas, and the entire Massif du Balaïtous, are mostly granite. Granite is a very hard and strong type of rock that forms deep inside the Earth from cooled magma.

Who First Climbed Pic Palas?

The first time someone officially climbed to the top of Pic Palas was in 1825. Two surveyors, Pierre Peytier and Paul-Michel Hossard, made the climb. They were actually trying to reach a different peak, the Pic du Balaïtous, but ended up making history by being the first to summit Pic Palas!
