Pimmit Hills is a lively neighborhood in Fairfax County, Virginia. It's a special kind of community called a 'census-designated place' (CDP). This means it's a place recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau for collecting population data. The name 'Pimmit Hills' comes from a nearby stream called Pimmit Run, which was named after a person named John Pimmit.

The Story of John Pimmit
John Pimmit was an early settler in the Virginia area. He lived there in the late 1600s. A stream in the area was named Pimmit Run after him.
Sadly, John Pimmit drowned in the Potomac River in 1688. This happened near the mouth of the stream that now carries his name.
How Pimmit Hills Grew
The land where Pimmit Hills now stands was mostly farmland for many years. The neighborhood began to be built in 1950. Most of the houses were constructed in the 1950s. They were built for World War II and Korean War veterans and their families.
Many of these first homes had three bedrooms and one bathroom. They were about 833 square feet in size. In 1950, they cost around $9,950. George Offutt started building the first homes in 1950. By 1957-1958, the area had 1,675 homes.
Most homes in Pimmit Hills are single-family houses. They usually sit on lots about a quarter of an acre in size. When the homes were first built, many areas had no trees. Today, Pimmit Hills is known for its many large oaks and Tulip trees.
Today, homes in Pimmit Hills are much more expensive. This is like other areas in Northern Virginia. In May 2023, the average home price was $1.1 million. This is because many of the original 1950s homes have been replaced by bigger, newer ones.
Pimmit Hills is very close to Tysons. Tysons is a growing city with many shops, restaurants, and businesses. It's also easy to get to the Silver Line Metro train from Pimmit Hills. This train can take you to Washington, D.C.. Fairfax County also has many great parks and activities for all ages.
Many older homes in Pimmit Hills have been updated. People often add second floors, basements, or expand the main floor. It's common to see older houses being torn down and new, larger homes built in their place.
There have been ideas to build more apartments or town houses in Pimmit Hills. However, homeowners have wanted to keep the neighborhood as single-family homes. Plans for the Tysons area also aim to keep Pimmit Hills as a community of single-family houses.
The Historic Pimmit Barn
The Pimmit Barn is a historic building on Cherri Drive. It was built in 1937. It used to be a dairy barn on the Smith family farm.
In 2018, a group called "Friends of Pimmit Barn" worked with Fairfax County. They helped save the barn for community use. Now, fun events like outdoor movies and Fall Festivals are held there every year.
Lisle Archibald Smith
Lisle Smith built the Pimmit Barn. He ran a dairy farm on the site for 15 years. He also owned other dairy farms in the area.
Smith was a lawyer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He worked for the government during the time of President Roosevelt.
Where is Pimmit Hills?
Pimmit Hills is located in a special triangle shape. This triangle is formed by three major highways:
- Interstate 495 (the Capital Beltway)
- Interstate 66
- State Route 267 (the Dulles Toll Road)
Inside this triangle, the neighborhood is bordered by Pimmit Run, Leesburg Pike (State Route 7), and Magarity Road. Even though residents use Falls Church as their mailing address, Pimmit Hills is part of Fairfax County.

The TV show My Name Is Earl has a fictional place called "Pimmit Hills Trailer Park." The creator of the show, Greg Garcia, lived in Pimmit Hills when he was a child.
