Pinta Pinta Tjapanangka (born in the late 1920s, died 1999) was an important Aboriginal artist from Australia. He was one of the first artists to join the famous Papunya Tula art movement. He is known for his unique Western Desert art style. Pinta Pinta was part of the Pintupi community. He painted stories from the Pintupi Dreaming, also called Tingari. These paintings showed important events from his homeland, like places around Winparrku, Lake MacDonald, and Lake Mackay.

Early Life and First Contact

Pinta Pinta was born in Western Australia, in a place called Yumari. This area is located in the Great Sandy Desert. He was likely born around 1927 or 1928.

Before meeting people from modern Australian society, Pinta Pinta lived a nomadic life in the desert. This means his family moved from place to place. In the 1950s, he and his family walked to Haasts Bluff. This was a government outpost where people could get food supplies. This was the first time he met people from modern Australian towns. His family was one of the last groups in Australia to come out of the desert.

Becoming an Artist

Pinta Pinta started painting in the mid-1970s. He began his art journey in a place called Papunya. Later, in 1981, he moved to Kintore after it was built.

In 1984, Pinta Pinta and his family created a small community called an outstation. This outstation was at Winparrku (also known as Mount Webb). It was located between Kintore and Kiwirrkurra. His family soon moved to live there.

Art Style and Legacy

Pinta Pinta's paintings often used simple colors like black, white, and ochre. A common design in his art was circles and lines. These shapes often showed dreaming tracks or pathways.

His artworks are displayed in important places. You can find some of his paintings in the Australian Museum. Other works are at the National Gallery of Victoria and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.

Family Life

Pinta Pinta Tjapanangka had two sons. His older son, Matthew, was born in the early 1960s. His younger son, Nyilyari, was born around 1965. Nyilyari also became a well-known artist, following in his father's footsteps.
