Plattekill is a town located in Ulster County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 10,424 people lived there. The town's name comes from a local stream called the Platte Kill.

Plattekill is in the southeastern part of Ulster County. It is just north of the town of Newburgh, which is in Orange County.

The town has five main communities, often called hamlets. These are Ardonia, Clintondale, Modena, New Hurley, and Plattekill.

History of Plattekill

People from Europe first settled in the Plattekill area in the early 1700s. The town of Plattekill was officially created in 1800. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Marlborough.

Location and Borders

The southern edge of Plattekill borders Orange County. This line separates Plattekill from the town of Newburgh. To the west, Plattekill shares borders with Shawangunk and Gardiner. To the north, it borders the town of Lloyd.

The eastern border of Plattekill runs along the Marlboro Mountain ridge. This ridge separates Plattekill from the town of Marlborough.

Major Roads

Several important roads pass through Plattekill. These include:

  • The New York State Thruway (Interstate 87), which is a major highway.
  • US 44, which runs together with NY 55 for part of its way.

  • Plattekill – This is the main hamlet that shares its name with the town. It is in the southeastern part of the town, east of the Thruway on Route 32. It is just north of the Orange County line.
  • Sylva – This hamlet is located west of Plattekill on Route 32.
  • Tuckers Corners – This location is near the eastern border of the town.
