Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire are two exciting role-playing games made by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. They were created for the Game Boy Advance handheld system. These games are the third main adventures in the popular Pokémon series. They introduced 100 new Pokémon, bringing the total number to 386!

Later, a remake called Pokémon Emerald was released. It added new features like the Battle Frontier. Even newer remakes, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, came out for the Nintendo 3DS in 2014.

Gameplay

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire brought many cool new things to the series. They added a better computer system for storing your Pokémon. The way battles worked also changed a lot. For example, they introduced double battles, where you use two Pokémon at once!

Two important new features were Abilities and Natures.

  • Abilities are special powers each Pokémon has, like making certain moves stronger.
  • Natures are like a Pokémon's personality. They affect how a Pokémon's stats (like attack or speed) grow as it gets stronger. These additions made the game more interesting and strategic.

Another fun new activity was Pokémon Contests. In these contests, your Pokémon perform special moves for judges. They are scored on their "condition," which is how well-groomed and happy they are. You could even give your Pokémon special treats called Pokéblocks to help them do better in contests!

Plot

The story of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire takes place in a new area called the Hoenn region. This region is inspired by an island in Japan. Hoenn has 15 cities and towns, all connected by different "routes" where you can find wild Pokémon.

You play as a child who has just moved to Littleroot Town. At the start of your adventure, you get to choose one of three starter Pokémon from Professor Birch: Torchic, Mudkip, or Treecko. You also have a rival, either May or Brendan, who is also a Pokémon Trainer.

The main part of the story involves stopping two bad groups: Team Aqua and Team Magma. These groups are like secret societies that want to use powerful Pokémon to change the weather in Hoenn.

  • In Pokémon Ruby, Team Magma wants to use the legendary Pokémon Groudon to dry up the oceans and create more land.
  • In Pokémon Sapphire, Team Aqua wants to use the legendary Pokémon Kyogre to increase the water levels in Hoenn.

You first meet one of these teams in the Petalburg Woods. You help a worker and get back a stolen package. Later, you find out that Professor Cozmo, a scientist who studies stars, has been taken by Team Aqua or Magma. You find them in Meteor Falls, but they escape to Mt. Chimney, a volcano, with a special meteorite.

You follow the team to Mt. Chimney, where they plan to use the meteorite to make the volcano erupt. You defeat their leader and return the meteorite to Professor Cozmo. Soon after, the team tries to change the weather again by stealing a Castform. Castform is a special Pokémon that can change its form based on the weather.

After you reach Mt. Pyre, a big mountain that is also a Pokémon cemetery, Team Aqua or Magma steals a special orb. This orb can control a legendary Pokémon (Groudon in Ruby, Kyogre in Sapphire). The team then steals a submarine from Captain Stern in Slateport City. You try to stop them at their hideout, but you can't prevent the submarine from leaving.

The team then travels with the orb to the Seafloor Cavern, where Groudon or Kyogre is sleeping. They use the orb to wake up the legendary Pokémon! Once awake, the Pokémon goes to the Cave of Origin and causes a huge drought (in Ruby) or terrible rainstorms (in Sapphire). Your job is to either defeat or catch this powerful Pokémon. Once you do, Hoenn's weather goes back to normal. After that, you can focus on catching all the other Pokémon in the game!

Music

The music in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire is all game music. There are no spoken words in the game; everything is shown as text on the screen. The music was created by Junichi Masuda, Go Ichinose, and Morikazu Aoki. Most of the songs don't have lyrics, except for two tracks called "Trick Master" and "Slateport City."

Junichi Masuda mainly wrote the battle songs. Go Ichinose composed most of the music for towns, routes, and fanfare (short, exciting tunes). Morikazu Aoki created the rest of the music.
