Pomfret is a town in Chautauqua County, New York. It is located in the western part of New York State. In 2020, about 13,236 people lived there.
The town is in the north-central part of the county. It is south of Dunkirk. The village of Fredonia is also part of Pomfret.

History of Pomfret
People first started settling in the Pomfret area around 1806. The town of Pomfret was officially created in 1808. It was formed from a larger area called the town of Chautauqua.
Over the years, Pomfret became smaller. Parts of its land were used to create five new towns in the county.
Geography of Pomfret
Pomfret covers an area of about 44 square miles (114 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
Water Features
The northwestern part of the town touches the shore of Lake Erie. This is one of the Great Lakes.
- Canadaway Creek is a stream that flows north through the town. It eventually empties into Lake Erie.
- Cassadaga Lake is a lake partly in Pomfret. The northern part of this lake is within the town.
- Fredonia Reservoir is a lake that Canadaway Creek flows through.
- Mud Lake is a small pond located east of Cassadaga Lake.
- Bear Lake is a small lake west of Lily Dale, partly in the town.
