Stockton is a small town located in Chautauqua County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 2,036 people lived there.

The town is named after Richard Stockton. He was an important person who signed the Declaration of Independence.

History of Stockton

The first settlers came to the Stockton area around 1810. The town of Stockton was officially created in 1821. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Chautauqua.

In 1850, Stockton grew bigger. More land was added to it from the town of Ellery.

Geography and Location

Stockton covers a total area of about 47.6 square miles (123.4 km2). Most of this area, about 47.1 square miles (122.1 km2), is land. The remaining part, about 0.50 square miles (1.3 km2), is water.

New York State Route 60 is a main road that runs north and south through the eastern side of the town.

  • Cassadaga Lakes – A lake system partly located in the northeast of the town.
  • Centralia – A hamlet found near the southern border of the town.
  • Coes Corners – A place in the western part of the town.

Fire and Emergency Services

The town of Stockton has two volunteer fire departments that help in emergencies:
