Popeye no Eigo Asobi is a fun video game that helps players learn English. It's a spin-off from the popular Popeye arcade game. This game is based on the famous American comic strip created by E. C. Segar. Nintendo released it in Japan in 1983.
About the Game
Popeye no Eigo Asobi came out for the Family Computer in 1983. It was released around the same time as a version of the original Popeye arcade game. This game is an educational video game, meaning it's made to teach you things. Another similar game, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, came out shortly after this one. In Popeye no Eigo Asobi, the character Popeye helps players learn how to spell words in English.
The game looks a lot like the original Popeye arcade game. However, there's a big difference: you can't "lose" or "die" in this game. You just get incorrect answers. This game uses the characters from the classic Popeye cartoons. It was only released in Japan. It wasn't released in places like North America because most people there already speak English. Also, making a version to teach Japanese was difficult with the technology back then.
How to Play
The game has three different ways to play: Word Puzzle A, Word Puzzle B, and Word Catcher.
Word Puzzle A
This mode is like the first level of the original Popeye game. You'll see a Japanese word on the screen. This word belongs to one of six groups: Animals, Countries, Food, Sports, Science, or Others. You'll also see blank spaces for the English word. Your job is to move Popeye around to pick letters of the alphabet to fill in the blanks.
If you pick a wrong letter, Brutus/Bluto will punch a basket that holds Swee'Pea. You need to solve the puzzle before Swee'Pea's basket gets knocked off its platform. If you get stuck, you can punch the "?" icon to give up. If you lose or give up, the game will show you the correct English word.
Word Puzzle B
This mode is very similar to Word Puzzle A. The main difference is that you are not given the Japanese word beforehand. You have to figure out the English word just from the blank spaces and the category.
Word Catcher
This mode is for two players and is based on the third level of the original game. One player controls Popeye, and the other controls Bluto. Three Japanese words appear on the left side of the screen. Both players race to collect letters that Olive Oyl throws. The goal is to spell out the English words that match the Japanese ones. The first player to correctly spell five words wins the game!
