Port of Subs, Inc. is a popular chain of sandwich shops in the western United States. It's known for its delicious submarine sandwiches, often called "subs." The company started in Reno, Nevada, and now has about 145 locations where people can grab a tasty meal.
The Story of Port of Subs
How It Started
The first Port of Subs sandwich shop opened in 1972 in Sparks, Nevada. It was started by the Larsen family and was originally called "Sub Shop."
In 1975, John Larsen bought the company. He decided to give it a new name. He held a contest for the community to suggest ideas. More than 10,000 names were sent in! The winning name was "Port of Subs."
Growing Bigger
After the name change, Port of Subs began to grow. Between 1975 and 1985, ten more shops opened. This helped the company become a regional franchise. A franchise means that other people can open their own Port of Subs shops, but they follow the rules and recipes of the main company.
Today, Port of Subs has over 140 locations. You can find these shops in many western states. These include Nevada, California, Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
In 2023, a company called Area 15 Ventures, LLC, bought Port of Subs. The chairman of this company is Dave Liniger, who also helped start RE/MAX, a well-known real estate company.
