Pottsylvania is a make-believe country that appeared in the classic TV cartoon shows Rocky and His Friends and The Bullwinkle Show. These shows are often called Rocky and Bullwinkle.
This fictional nation is a funny take on countries in Eastern Europe during the Cold War. The Cold War was a time when the United States and the Soviet Union had a lot of tension, but no direct fighting. Pottsylvania characters sometimes use German words. You can even see the Iron Cross on their military planes.
Pottsylvania is known for being a country focused on espionage (spying) and being sneaky. For example, children in schools were taught how to do tricky things. Even everyday talks had hidden meanings.

What is Pottsylvania Like?
Pottsylvania is a land where the "Cold War" never ended. It is filled with government agents (spies) and saboteurs (people who secretly damage things). The highest award you could get there was called the "Double Cross." Their newspaper, The Pottsylvania Eavesdropper, was printed in invisible ink!
Even though many people thought Pottsylvania was just a joke, the government of the Soviet Union didn't like it. They even banned Rocky & Bullwinkle because they thought it was against their country.
Pottsylvania's Economy and Products
Besides spying, Pottsylvania's main industry was making a vehicle called the "Assassin-8." Millions of these vehicles were built. This is funny because Pottsylvania only had about 12 miles of road!
The country's economy was very weak. They had almost no raw materials (like wood or metal) or things for people to buy. They also didn't create much art or culture to share with the world. Because of this, Pottsylvania had to use force and tricks to survive.
In one episode, it was said that Pottsylvania's only real product was "mean." Their leader, Fearless Leader, believed they had more "mean" than any other country. He wanted to "export mean" to other nations, which meant declaring war. But even that didn't go well. His military commanders would say, "But anybody could beat us! Besides being mean, we're all cowards!"
Geography and Landmarks
Pottsylvania has a large mountain called "Whynchatakea Peak." The way Pottsylvania looks on a map changes a lot in different episodes. Sometimes it looks like a peninsula (land surrounded by water on three sides). Other times, it's a coastal nation with seaports, or it's completely surrounded by land.
Even with these changes, you can always reach Pottsylvania by submarine. This seems to be the main way to get into the country. The changing geography was common because the animation studio had a small budget.
Plants and Animals
Pottsylvania is home to some unique plants and animals. One plant is the "Pottsylvania Creeper." It's like a man-eating Venus flytrap.
The country also has one of the few places where mooseberry bushes grow. Mooseberries are important in Rocky and Bullwinkle's world. They are used to make rocket fuel!
Pottsylvania's Government
The government of Pottsylvania was led by a dictator known as Fearless Leader. A dictator is a ruler who has total power over a country. Fearless Leader had a group of advisors who always agreed with him. In some episodes, another important person in the government was Mr. Big.
Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale were Fearless Leader's most used secret agents. They were often sent to carry out the country's plans to gain power around the world. Fearless Leader once told Boris that he used him so much because Boris "work[ed] cheap."
National Anthem
"Hail Pottsylvania" is the official song of Pottsylvania. It appears in episodes like Missouri Mish Mash and The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle.
Here are the lyrics:
Hail, Pottsylvania
Hail to the black and the blue!
Hail, Pottsylvania
Sneaky and crooked through and through,
Down with the good guys, up with the boss
Under the sign of the triple cross, hey!
Hail, Pottsylvania,
Hail, hail, hail!
