This fungus destroyed potato crops. Potatoes were the main food for many people in Ireland. About one million people died because of the famine.
What the Pope's Letter Said
Praedecessores nostros talked about many things related to the Great Irish Famine. First, Pope Pius IX spoke about how past popes had helped Christian nations. He remembered how he had asked people in Rome to pray for Ireland. He also asked for money to be collected. This money was sent to Ireland to help those in need.
The Pope said the crisis was not over. He was still getting letters saying the famine was getting worse. More help was needed. This was the main reason for his letter. He asked every church area to hold three days of public prayer. These prayers were to ask God to end the famine in Ireland. They also asked that it not happen in other parts of Europe.
To encourage these prayers, people who attended would receive special blessings. Those who prayed for all three days and received sacraments would get an even greater blessing. Pope Pius IX also told people to give alms, which means giving money or help to the poor. He said it was important to care for God's people. He also asked church leaders to pray for the whole Church.
