Elizabeth Stuart (1635–1650) was a princess of England and Scotland. She was the second daughter of King Charles I and Henrietta Maria of France. Elizabeth was born on 28 December 1635 at St. James's Palace in London. She was baptized there on 2 January the next year by William Laud, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury.

A Royal Childhood

Princess Elizabeth grew up in a time of great change in England. Her father, King Charles I, ruled both England and Scotland. Elizabeth was known for being a very smart and kind child. She could speak several languages, including Hebrew, Greek, Italian, and French.

Her Family and Siblings

Elizabeth had many brothers and sisters. Her older brother, Charles, later became king. Her younger sister, Anne, sadly died very young. Elizabeth was often painted with her siblings.

Life During the English Civil War

The time Elizabeth lived in was difficult. There was a big war in England called the English Civil War. This war was fought between her father, King Charles I, and the Parliament.

The King's Capture

During the war, Elizabeth and her siblings were sometimes separated from their parents. After the King was defeated, he was captured. Elizabeth and her younger brother, Henry, were allowed to visit their father. These visits were very sad, as the King knew his life was in danger.

Her Father's Execution

In 1649, King Charles I was put on trial and then executed. This was a shocking event for everyone, especially his children. Elizabeth was only 13 years old when her father died. She was very upset by this.

Life After the King's Death

After her father's death, England was ruled by Oliver Cromwell and the Parliament. This period was called the Commonwealth. The royal children were no longer treated as royalty.

Imprisonment and Death

Princess Elizabeth was sent to live at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight. This was the same castle where her father had been held prisoner. She was kept there with her brother Henry. Elizabeth became ill with pneumonia. She died at Carisbrooke Castle on 8 September 1650, when she was just 14 years old. She was buried on the Isle of Wight.
