The Prospect Highway is a key road in Western Sydney, Australia. It is about 11.1 kilometres (6.9 miles) long. This highway connects the areas of Baulkham Hills and Pemulwuy.

It offers a free way to travel between major motorways. These include the M2 Hills Motorway and Westlink M7 in the north. It also connects to the M4 Western Motorway further south. The highway is known by several names along its path. These names include Abbott Road, Seven Hills Road, Wall Park Avenue, and Blacktown Road.

Where Does Prospect Highway Go?

The Prospect Highway gets its name from the suburb of Prospect. Like many roads in Sydney, it was created by joining several smaller local roads.

The highway begins in Baulkham Hills. It starts at the intersection of Old Windsor Road and the ramps to the M2 Hills Motorway. Here, it is called Abbott Road. It is a four-lane road, meaning it has two lanes going each way.

After a short distance, it widens to six lanes. It then changes its name to Seven Hills Road. Soon after, it meets Station Road and Johnson Avenue. At this point, its name changes again to Prospect Highway.

The road narrows back to four lanes after crossing the Main Western railway line. It then meets Seven Hills Road South. Here, it becomes a single-carriageway road and changes its name to Wall Park Avenue.

It widens again to a dual-carriageway road before becoming Blacktown Road. This section heads south. It narrows again to a two-lane, single-carriageway road after Bungarribee Road.

Blacktown Road then splits off. The main road changes its name back to Prospect Highway. It continues south through Prospect. It crosses over both the Great Western Highway and the M4 Western Motorway. The highway ends at Widemere Road in Pemulwuy. The road then continues south as Widemere Road.

How Prospect Highway Was Formed

The history of Prospect Highway involves several important laws. The Main Roads Act of 1924 helped create Main Roads in New South Wales. These roads received some funding from the state government.

Later, the Main Roads (Amendment) Act of 1929 allowed for more roads to be declared. On August 26, 1988, Prospect Highway was officially declared Main Road 644. This declaration covered parts of Abbott Road, Seven Hills Road, Wall Park Avenue, Blacktown Road, and Church Lane.

Church Lane, which was part of the route, was officially renamed Prospect Highway on April 5, 1991. Another section of Seven Hills Road was also renamed Prospect Highway on November 27, 1992.

The Roads Act of 1993 updated how roads are classified. Under this act, Prospect Highway kept its status as Main Road 644.

For a few years, from 1992 to 1998, a part of the route was known as State Route 63. This section was between Blacktown and Prospect. However, this number was later removed. Today, the entire highway does not have a state route number.

Future Plans for the Highway

In 2015, the NSW Government started planning upgrades for a section of the highway. This planned upgrade covers about 3.6 kilometres (2.2 miles). It is located between Reservoir Road in Prospect and St Martins Crescent in Blacktown. These upgrades aim to improve traffic flow and safety on the road.
