Pulteney is a small town located in Steuben County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,260 people lived there. The town got its name from a large area of land called the Pulteney Tract.

The Town of Pulteney is in the northeastern part of Steuben County. It is located a bit northeast of the village of Bath.

The History of Pulteney

The first people to settle in this area arrived around 1797. For a while, the place was known as "Harmonyville." The actual town of Pulteney was officially formed in 1808. It was created from a part of the Town of Bath.

Later, parts of Pulteney were used to form other towns. The Town of Prattsburgh was created in 1813. Also, a part of the Town of Urbana was formed from Pulteney in 1848.

The Pulteney Tract

The "Pulteney Purchase" or "Pulteney Tract" was a large section of land. This land is in the region of Steuben County. It was bought from Robert Morris by a group of English investors. These investors included Sir William Pulteney, 5th Baronet. Their group was called "The Pulteney Association."

Historic Places

The Western New York Wine Company building is an important local landmark. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. This means it is recognized for its historical importance.

Geography and Location

Pulteney covers a total area of about 36.4 square miles (94.4 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 33.2 square miles (85.8 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 3.2 square miles (8.59 square kilometers), is water.

The town is located on the western side of Keuka Lake. Keuka Lake is one of the beautiful Finger Lakes in New York. The northern and eastern borders of the town are also part of the border with Yates County.

Main Roads

New York State Route 54A is a major road in Pulteney. It runs north and south through the eastern part of the town.
