Early Life and Education
Pío Cabanillas was born on 13 November 1923 in Pontevedra, a city in Spain. His father was a lawyer, and his uncle, Roman C., was a poet. Pío Cabanillas himself studied law and earned a degree in the field.
A Career in Spanish Politics
Cabanillas was a member of the Council of the Realm. This was a very important group that advised the government during the time of Francisco Franco in Spain.
Minister of Information and Tourism
On 4 January 1974, Pío Cabanillas became the Minister of Information and Tourism. He joined the government led by Prime Minister Carlos Arias Navarro. He took over this role from Fernando de Liñán.
Cabanillas was known for being quite open-minded. He tried to allow more freedom for the press. However, he was removed from his job in October 1974 by Franco. This happened because he was seen as "too liberal in lifting press censorship." After him, León Herrera Esteban became the new minister.
Minister of Justice
Later, on 31 August 1981, Cabanillas was chosen to be the Minister of Justice. He replaced Francisco Fernández Ordóñez in this role. His time as Justice Minister ended on 3 December 1982, when Fernando Ledesma Bartret took over.
Member of European Parliament
In 1986, Pío Cabanillas continued his political career. He became a member of the European Parliament for the People's Party. He served in this important international role until 1991.
His Ideas and Actions
Pío Cabanillas was a close friend of Manuel Fraga, who was also a former minister. Cabanillas played a key part in creating a new press law in 1966. This law helped to end the strict press censorship in Spain.
He was also very important during Spain's move from a dictatorship to a democracy in the 1970s. At first, he was seen as someone who wanted reforms and changes. However, in his later years, especially while working in the European Parliament, he was considered more conservative.
His Passing
Pío Cabanillas died in Madrid on 10 October 1991. He passed away due to a heart attack.
