Qaem Shahr (Persian: قائمشهر; ) is a city in the Central District of Qaem Shahr County, Mazandaran province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district. Originally known as Ŝâhi was used until the Iranian Revolution in 1979 when the city acquired its current name.
Demographics
Population
In 1951, Qaem Shahr's population was around 18,000, growing to 123,684 in 1991. At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 174,246 in 48,055 households. The following census in 2011 counted 196,050 people in 60,347 households. The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 204,953 people in 68,407 households.
Geography
Location
The city is 228 kilometres (142 mi) northeast of Tehran via road 79 which passes through Shirgah, Pol-e Sefid and Firuzkuh. It is also 19 kilometres (12 mi) southeast of Babol; and 23 kilometres (14 mi) southwest of Sari, the capital of the province, connected to both by road 22.
Qaem Shahr is where the North Iranian railway quits the fertile plains of Mazandaran to cross the highest mountain range of the Middle East, the Alborz.
