Quercus tuberculata is a special kind of oak tree. It grows naturally in the mountains of Mexico. You can find it in places like Baja California Sur, Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Michoacán, Durango, and Nuevo León.

What Does This Tree Look Like?

Quercus tuberculata is a deciduous tree. This means it loses its leaves every year, usually in the fall or winter. It can grow quite tall, up to about 12 meters (which is like a four-story building!). Its trunk can be as wide as 30 centimeters.

The leaves of this oak tree are very interesting. They are shaped like an egg and feel thick and tough, almost like leather. Each leaf can be up to 15 centimeters long. Their edges are wavy, but they don't have sharp teeth or deep cuts like some other oak leaves.

Where Does This Tree Live?

This oak tree mostly lives in northwestern Mexico. It is found in mountain ranges like the Sierra Madre Occidental. You can see it in the states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango, and Nayarit. It also grows in the Sierra de la Laguna in southern Baja California. Another place it lives is the northern Sierra Madre Oriental in Nuevo León, and in Michoacán in central Mexico.

Its Home in the Mountains

Quercus tuberculata likes to live in special kinds of forests. These are called oak or pine-oak forests. They are usually found high up in the mountains, between 900 and 2000 meters above sea level.

The tree prefers places where it rains about 500 to 600 millimeters each year. The average temperature where it lives is usually between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius. It often grows on hillsides that are quite steep, usually between 30 and 40 degrees. You can also find it near streams and other water sources.

This oak tree likes soil that is a little bit acidic. It also prefers soil that doesn't have a lot of organic stuff in it and feels a bit sandy. Sometimes, Quercus tuberculata is one of the most common trees in the areas where it grows.

How We Protect This Tree

Scientists estimate that this tree lives across a very large area. Its population is generally stable, meaning there are plenty of these trees around. Because of this, its conservation status is listed as "Least Concern". This means it's not currently in danger of disappearing.
