History of Rüderswil

The oldest signs of people living here are three old castles. These castles were built a long, long time ago, in the Middle Ages. A knight named Adalbert von Rüderswil was mentioned in 1146. Not much is known about his family. Later, a group called the Teutonic Knights owned a lot of land in Rüderswil.
The village church was first mentioned in 1275. Its tower was built in the 1300s. The part of the church where the choir sings was built in the 1400s. In 1528, the area of Bern, including Rüderswil, changed to the Protestant Reformation faith.
Rüderswil stayed a farming area for a long time. Then, in the 1700s, people started weaving canvas at home. This was a big change! A cheese factory opened in 1853. A spinning mill, which makes thread, opened in 1869.
