It's about 14 miles northeast of Borrego Springs and 20 miles south of Indio.

About Rabbit Peak

Rabbit Peak is known for being one of the toughest mountains to climb in Southern California. This is because of two main reasons: how much you have to climb up, and how little water there is along the trails.

Where is it?

Rabbit Peak is nestled in the southern part of the Santa Rosa Mountains. These mountains are part of a larger group called the Peninsular Ranges. These ranges stretch from Southern California all the way down into Mexico. The mountain is located in a desert area. This means it can get very hot and dry, especially during the summer.

Why is it a Challenge?

Many hikers consider Rabbit Peak a very difficult climb. It's not just about the height of the mountain. It's also about the journey to the top. The trails are long and steep, and there's very little shade.

What is Elevation Gain?

When people talk about "elevation gain," they mean how much you climb upwards from the start of your hike to the highest point. For Rabbit Peak, the trails start at a much lower elevation. This means hikers have to climb a lot of feet (or meters) to reach the summit. It's like climbing many, many flights of stairs! This can be very tiring for your legs and lungs.

Why is Water Important?

Another big challenge is the lack of water. In many mountain areas, you might find streams or springs where you can refill your water bottles. But on Rabbit Peak, there are almost no natural water sources. This means hikers must carry all the water they need for the entire trip. Carrying enough water for a long, hot hike adds a lot of weight to a backpack. It's super important to stay hydrated, especially in a desert environment.
