Rachel Binx is an American expert who works with data, designs things, and creates computer programs. She helps people understand information in new ways. Rachel also started two companies, Meshu and Gifpop. These companies turn digital information, like maps or animated pictures, into real-life objects. She has also worked for NASA, the famous space agency!

Rachel's Early Life and School

Rachel Binx grew up in New Mexico. In 2006, she moved to California to go to Santa Clara University. There, she studied two very different subjects: Mathematics and Art History.

After finishing college, Rachel started working on her own. She helped people create cool ways to show data. She also designed websites.

Rachel's Career and Cool Projects

In 2011, Rachel joined Stamen Design. This was a special studio in San Francisco, California that mixed design with technology. At Stamen, Rachel worked on projects for big names. These included MTV, Facebook, and even Oprah.

Creating Physical Objects from Data

Rachel Binx co-founded three small companies. These companies explored how to make unique physical items. They used data that was important to their customers.

Meshu: Jewelry from Your Journeys

Meshu was started with Sha Hwang, another person from Stamen Design. Meshu lets people upload geographic data. This data can come from apps like Foursquare. Then, Meshu turns this data into jewelry and accessories! The final product is a 3D printed object. It's made from the places you've been.

Gifpop: Your Favorite GIFs in Real Life

Gifpop is a service that makes physical GIFs. You can upload your favorite animated GIF files. The service then prints them onto special cards. These cards use lenticular printing. This makes the image seem to move when you tilt it! Gifpop started with a Kickstarter project. It raised over $35,000 from more than 1,000 supporters.

monochōme: Custom Clothes with Maps

In 2014, Rachel started monochōme. This is a clothing company. It lets customers use map images from OpenStreetMap. They can then create their own custom prints on different clothes. Imagine wearing a shirt with a map of your hometown!

Working with NASA

In 2015, Rachel Binx joined NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This is a very important place! There, she built tools to help visualize data. This data came from rovers, satellites, and other space technology. Rachel worked with a team that studied how humans and computers work together. She made tools to help them understand space missions better.

Amtrak Explorer

In 2022, Rachel created Amtrak Explorer. This is a free tool that anyone can use. It helps people see and understand Amtrak train routes.
