Ramses Alexander Barden, born on January 1, 1986, is a former American football player. He played as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL). Ramses played college football for the Cal Poly Mustangs. The New York Giants picked him in the third round of the 2009 NFL draft. He even won a Super Bowl with the Giants! This big win was Super Bowl XLVI against the New England Patriots.

Early Life and High School Sports

Ramses Barden was born in Altadena, California. He went to Flintridge Preparatory School in La Canada Flintridge, California for high school. He was a star athlete there! Ramses was picked for the all-league team three times in football.

As a senior, he caught 41 passes for 915 yards. He also scored 14 touchdowns. Ramses also played free safety on defense. But football wasn't his only sport. He also played basketball, averaging 17 points per game. He competed in volleyball and track and field too! Ramses was named the small schools High School Athlete of the Year. Many colleges wanted him, but he chose to play for the Cal Poly Mustangs.

College Football Career

Ramses Barden played college football for the Cal Poly Mustangs. He was a very successful player there.

Freshman Year at Cal Poly

Ramses joined Cal Poly in 2004. He spent that year as a "redshirt" freshman, meaning he practiced but didn't play in games. This helped him get ready for college football.

In 2005, as a redshirt freshman, Ramses led his team in catches. He had 40 receptions for 655 yards and 9 touchdowns. He was named a first-team All-Great West Conference player. In one game, he caught 9 passes against Southern Utah. He also blocked two field goal attempts in other games.

Sophomore Season Success

In 2006, Ramses continued to shine. He led Cal Poly again with 42 catches for 824 yards. He scored 5 touchdowns that season. For the second year in a row, he was named a first-team All-Great West player.

In a game against Sacramento State, he had 9 catches for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns. This earned him the Great West Conference Player of the Week award. His 824 receiving yards were among the best in the school's history.

Junior Year Highlights

Ramses had an amazing junior year in 2007. He was named to the All-Great West First Team again. He was also named the Great West Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

He caught 57 passes for an impressive 1,467 yards. He scored 18 touchdowns that season! In one game, he had 10 catches for a career-high 268 yards and 3 touchdowns. After this great season, he was considered for the Walter Payton Award. This award goes to the best offensive player in his division.

Senior Season and Records

As a senior in 2008, Ramses kept up his incredible performance. He matched his junior year with 18 touchdowns. He also had more catches, with 67 receptions for 1,257 yards.

Fans at Spanos Stadium loved him. They even made T-shirts that said "Throw it to Ramses!" In a big game against UC Davis, Ramses broke a division record. He scored a touchdown catch in his 17th straight game! This broke a record previously held by Jerry Rice.

Ramses finished his college career with 206 catches, 4,203 yards, and 50 touchdowns. In his last college game, he had 108 yards and two touchdowns. He finished fourth in the Walter Payton Award voting that year.

Professional Football Career

Ramses Barden moved on to play in the NFL after college.

Before the NFL Draft

Before the NFL Combine, Ramses was measured. He was 6 feet 6.5 inches tall and weighed 225 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 seconds. He was the tallest wide receiver in his draft class.

New York Giants

In the 2009 NFL draft, the New York Giants chose Ramses. They traded up to pick him in the third round. He didn't play much in his first year, catching only 1 pass for 16 yards.

In his second season, he caught 5 passes for 64 yards. However, he broke his ankle and had to miss the rest of the season. He returned in 2011, catching 2 passes in a win against the New England Patriots.

In 2012, Ramses had a great game against the Carolina Panthers. He caught 9 passes for 138 yards. This was his best game as a professional. He was re-signed by the Giants in 2013 but was released before the season began.

Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars

After not playing in 2013, Ramses signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2014. He was released by them later that year. He then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in August 2014. The Jaguars also released him later that month.

Life After Football

After his football career, Ramses Barden tried out for the Essendon Football Club in Australia in 2015. This was for a different sport called Australian rules football. The tryout was short, and he wasn't offered a contract. Today, Ramses works as a coach for the football team at Flintridge Preparatory School. This is the same high school he attended!
