A Brief History of Randolph

Moving the Town: A New Location

The original town of Randolph was located about a mile east of where it is today. In 1962, the Tuttle Creek reservoir began to fill up. This huge project caused ten towns to be affected, and four of them were completely covered by water.

Randolph was the only town that decided to rebuild in a new spot. Today, the streets in the new Randolph are named after the towns that were submerged by the lake.

Exploring Old Randolph

You can still see the ruins of the original town of Randolph. They are on the north side of Kansas Highway 16, where it crosses the lake. The old downtown area is on an island in the marshy northern part of the lake.

Sometimes, when Fancy Creek is low, you can walk to this island. However, the paths of Fancy Creek and the Big Blue River often change. This makes it hard to predict when you can visit "Old Randolph."
