Randstad facts for kids
The Randstad is a very important area in the western part of the Netherlands. It is like a big circle of cities that are close together. This area covers parts of four provinces: North Holland, South Holland, Flevoland, and Utrecht.
Many large and well-known Dutch cities are in the Randstad. These include Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden, Den Haag, Delft, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Gouda, Utrecht, Hilversum, and Almere.
The name "Randstad" was first used by Albert Plesman. He was the person who started the airline KLM. When he looked at the area from an airplane, he noticed that the cities almost formed a circle.
The Randstad covers about 20% of the total land area of the Netherlands. However, more than 40% of all the people in the Netherlands live here! The cities in the Randstad are not too far apart. For example, Den Haag and Rotterdam are only about 26 kilometres (16 mi) from each other. Amsterdam and Rotterdam are about 77 kilometres (48 mi) apart.
In the very center of this circle of cities, there is a special area called the Groene Hart. This name means "Green Heart." Not many people live in the Green Heart. It is mostly open land with farms and nature.

Utrecht is a very old city with a beautiful historic center. It has a famous cathedral and a large university. Utrecht is also a major transport hub, meaning many trains and roads connect through it.

- Haarlem is a historic city close to Amsterdam, known for its art and architecture.
- Leiden is famous for its old university and its connection to the Pilgrims.

The Green Heart
In the middle of the Randstad, surrounded by all the busy cities, is an area called the Groene Hart. This means "Green Heart" in Dutch. It is a large, open space that is much less populated than the cities around it.
The Green Heart is mostly made up of:
- Farmland, where cows graze and crops grow.
- Lakes and rivers, which are great for boating and nature.
- Small villages and towns, where life is much quieter than in the big cities.
This area is very important for the environment. It provides green spaces and fresh air for the millions of people living in the Randstad. It also helps to keep the cities from growing too close together. Protecting the Green Heart is a big goal for the Netherlands.

The Randstad is very important for the Netherlands for several reasons:
- Economy: It is the main economic engine of the country. Many businesses, banks, and international companies are located here.
- Population: A huge part of the Dutch population lives and works in this area.
- Transport: It has major airports, train stations, and highways, connecting the Netherlands to the rest of Europe and the world.
