In 2000, as a junior, he was a starting defensive player. His team won the Florida Class 3A state championship that year. In 2001, during his senior year, he was named the Palm Beach County Player of the Year.
College Football Career
McDonald received a sports scholarship to attend the University of Florida. He played for the Florida Gators football teams from 2003 to 2006. The coaches decided he would "redshirt" his first year in 2002. This meant he practiced with the team but did not play in games.
In 2006, McDonald was a team captain for the Gators. That year, the team had a great season with 13 wins and only 1 loss. They won the 2007 BCS National Championship Game by beating the Ohio State Buckeyes 41–14. This was the Gators' second national championship. After the 2006 season, he was named a first-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) player.
